Realtors are never too busy to tell you how busy they are

When someone asks you how business is going, what do you say?

Too busy to handle more!

"I'm SO busy!"?  Careful.  This automated response may create the perception that you are so busy you couldn't possibly want or need more business.  You must have your hands completely full and can't possibly take on a single other task right now.  Right?  Usually this is not accurate.

Most real estate agents do stay very busy.  Boy, do I know the meaning of 'busy.'  Successful agents admit that by 'busy,' this means they are working a solid day including tasts such as marketing themselves, promoting current listings for sale, fielding new leads, nurturing old leads, email follow-up, social media monitoring and updating, and numerous other aspects along these lines to try to promote themselves and create more business and nurture their existing business.

If the average Realtor is working so hard to try to capture more business, why do they typically respond in such a way that perceives they're not able to handle any new business? Those agents have plenty of time to tell you just how busy they are.  This can unfortunately lead to the perception that they're so busy...TOO busy to handle any new business or referrals!  I have witnessed lost potential business and referrals firsthand just by overhearing this automated simple response of "I'm so busy" from agents.

The next time someone asks you how business is going and you are working hard to try to capture new business, reply with something along the lines of "I am fortunate to be  thriving in a changing economy (if you are), but I can always use more business!" End this statement with an open-ended question asking for their business or referrals.  If you don't ask others for business, you'll likely get what you asked for.  Nothing.

I had this happen to me a few years ago. A friend did not refer their friend to me because they thought I was too busy. Oops.

We're all guilty of this!  It's so hard sometimes to de-program ourselves from this response.

Buyers do keep you very busy, but not necessary help to keep your bills. Being a buyers' agents sometimes is very stressful in this market. Prices jumped up, inventory dropped down, multiple offers on the table, etc. one must act much faster and more aggressive to get a good property.

Welcome to ActiveRain and congrats on writing your first blog post, Anthea! Good point for agents to consider how their responses may be perceived. :)
