Charles Dickens

Bucks County is an area of great history and many historical celebrations. Much of early American history and major events of the Revolutionary War happened here. However, this weekend, many visitors will converge to celebrate the life of a British historical figure who, although he never lived here, made a permanent mark on Bucks County, the United States and the world.

2012 marks the 200 birthday of Charles Dickens, famed author of such classics as Oliver Twist, David Copperfield, and A Christmas Carol. Byers’ Choice Ltd., a Chalfont company that makes handcrafted Christmas figurines, is sponsoring a Dickens 200th Birthday Celebration this Saturday and Sunday from 9:00am to 5:00pm.

Activities include performances by Gerard Charles Dickens, the great-great grandson of Charles Dickens; and the Magic Lantern Show performing “A Victorian Christmas”. Saturday evening offers the Fezziwig Ball, a holiday turkey dinner with entertainment. Sunday events include lectures on the life and fashion of the Victorian woman; and a reading by Mr. Dickens titled “Sikes and Nancy”, from Oliver Twist.

The Byers’ Choice production floor will be open to the public for demonstrations showing the creation of their unique Christmas caroler figurines. There will even be British refreshments and a birthday cake made by Carlo’s Bakery of TLC’s “The Cake Boss”.

These events and more plan to celebrate the life and achievements of a great author, and bring some Christmas spirit to Bucks County a little early this year. Visit the Byers’ Choice website for the full schedule of events.
