Owl Creek Pass, Western Colorado Scenic Drive For Fall Colors. Owl Creek Pass is off the beaten path and isn't even paved, so you can get away from the traffic up here. Even though the road isn't paved, it's perfectly passable in any car and is well maintained.
You can access the pass from just north of Ridgway, Colorado on Highway 550, or east out of Montrose, Colorado about 24 miles to Cimarron Road. This is on the south side of Highway 50. I like to start from the Montrose end as the road gently climbs in elevation and slowly prepares you for the dramatic scenery ahead. The road is well marked no matter which way you decide to start. Just follow the signs for Owl Creek Pass.
From its jagged, spiked peaks to it's wide sweeping valley vistas, Owl Creek Pass, Western Colorado Scenic Drive For Fall Colors, is sure to amaze you. This drive can take you a few hours, or all day depending on how often you want to stop for pictures. There are also side trips you can take, and these roads are well maintained for at least a few miles. It's well worth the extra time to explore some of the side roads.
There is camping towards the top of Owl Creek Pass near Silver Jack Reservoir. The fishing isn't too great at the reservoir due to the elevation, often low water levels and fishing pressure.
There are several hiking trails in the area, and the trail heads are well marked. If you plan to do some hiking, get a topo map of the area.
There are large tracts of Aspen forest mixed with tall pine trees. The fall colors are really dramatic. The trip also gives you spectacular views of Court House Mountain and Chimney Rock. Both are popular climbing spots. Court House Mountain is 12,152 feet above sea level, and Chimney Rock stands tall at 11,781 feet.
Any time of the year is a great time to tour the pass, but the fall is especially beautiful due to the brilliant fall colors.
Some of you may remember some of these scenes from the old John Wayne movie, True Grit. It was filmed in this area and around Ridgway, Colorado.
