One of the most beautiful sunsets I've ever seen.
In late May of 2006 I went on a wonderful trip to the BVI (the British Virgin Islands). It changed my life. We were about 9 days on a 37 foot sailboat cruising from island to island however we decided, on a whim. I’ve never had a greater time.
Almost every evening was as beautiful as the one depicted in these photos. The five here were taken on June 1, 2006 in sequence over 8 minutes from 10:16 pm to 10:24 pm. I love the variety of colors and textures and how the hues change from one photo to the next.
I checked several sites online to find out how far off is the horizon. The island is a about a mile and the very edge of the horizon looking towards the island is a little over 14 miles.
I’m no sailor, I’m a landlubber from Renton, Washington. But I got my sea legs fast and acquired many sailing skills. Maybe it's a guy thing, but my imagination took me straight to The Far Side of the World, by Patrick O'Brian. I loved those stories as a kid and I really liked the movie Master & Commander directed by Peter Weir with Russell Crowe as Captain Aubrey.
We were several days on the water unplugged from any and all devices, accept the boats emergency radio and our portable stereo with a pile of CD's. I think on occasion I could live like this for the rest of my life. It's not hard to imagine.
Today I’m enjoying a quiet day at home. The windows and doors are open and the late summer breeze feels so good. It does remind me somehow of once upon a time on the Far Side of the World, on an adventure with friends, and sharing one of the most beautiful sunsets I've ever seen.
