My Bestest Bud!!!

By
Real Estate Agent with Travis Realty

This is "Ziggie", my "Bestest Bud" for 10 1/2 years (about 75 in dog years). He passed on Saturday after a month of rapid decline. The photo on the right shows him a few weeks ago after he had lost some weight, but he was still a MAGNIFICENT creation up until the end. He dropped a little more in the last few weeks, but still could wag his tail, play "bite" me, and every now and then, get up and walk around a bit. We had to carry him outside towards the end, and he was STILL heavy, but worth the effort! And he'd usually walk on back in!!

I thought he was about to go a month ago, but he held on much longer. He did it so that "I" could prepare myself. My other dogs had passed suddenly and I never got to spend that extra time with them that I wish I had. In looking back, he knew awhile back that it was time and had been trying to tell me, but I didn't see until the extreme weakness hit him and it was almost too late.

My wife, Sue, and I as well as the other 5 dogs we have all miss him. And now I'm the ONLY male in the house...nobody to talk "guy stuff" with...

Travis: One of my 3 dogs is getting "old". We just realized that she can't hear well or at all. When we say her favorite word "goodie", there is no response. She was always very competitive with our 6 year old female lab, but now they have become friends. I think the lab knows that there is no alpha left in "Tango". But I take them out to play with the tennis ball that is the lab's favorite game, but I make sure Tango doesn't overdo. Tango was my passenger and thousands of miles up and down California, and even once to British Columbia. She would be in my hotel room and let me know when someone was walking by outside. She would be in my office, making sure no bad guys came in. Thank you for letting me talk about her; I need to make sure she feels loved until the end, just as she loves me. It's sometimes easy to overlook the old dog who hangs back in favor of play with the younger ones.

Oh Travis I'm so sorry to hear of Ziggie's passing.  Not easy I know.  He was beautiful or should I say quite handsome .  I'm very sorry for your loss.

Ms. Hella, your last sentence about the old dog hanging back - that was Ziggie. He would go to his "command post view" in the loft and watch thru the balcony rails (I'm hoping with some amusement) the craziness that went on down below. He was always that "silent presence and protector" that you knew was watching over you and the household!

Ms. Kerrie, THANK YOU for the kind words!

When he was younger and I was single, I used to take him to the Tanning Salon with me. One year, I was working another "job" as a hobby and had someone running the salon. She took him outside for a "break", he was spooked, took off and disappeared. We looked all over, but since it was a very busy commercial area, figured the worst. A couple of days later, on a Sunday when I was working, he came slinking in the back door, covered in mud with his head down like HE had done something wrong. Needless to say, he was quickly reassured and after getting a second chance with him, he was even MORE special than before!!

As with all of my "dawgz", he was in some form or another, a "rescue", so they are ALL special in their own way!! Him, just a bit more...

I had a dog that tired to tell me it was time and finally just laid down on his cushion......being able to say good-by is important to use and them.

Ziggie sure was a beautiful pup and I can only imagine your loss and sorrow.  I've lost a couple that were like kids... I still think of them years later.  I dread the day our Mini Schnauzer Dixie leaves us.... I'm not sure we will be able to get another one after her.

Mr. Wallace - yep, amazing when THEY know and are doing THEIR best to say "Good-bye". WE just have to be able to read their signs and hints!!

Ms. Sharon - we have two more W's. One is probably older than Ziggie (a Rescue, so don't know her real age). Had her about 9 years now. The other is a puppy of Ziggie's. She's about six years old. Then the 3 mutts, who are much younger.

Thank you Mr. John. I too dread the day our old lady goes (mentioned above).

Trayou vis,

I'm sorry for your loss. Ziggie was very special, I can see that in those photographs. Truly, he was a magnificent creation and I know it's not going to be the same. He wasn't just a pet, he was FAMILY.

The loss of a pet is so emotional. May you find comfort knowing provided Ziggie with 75 years of love too.

Travis ~ Ziggie looks like he was a very sweet boy ... and I'm sure you all miss him terribly.  There is just nothing like the bond between a dog and his "people," is there?   When my little Darby was close to the end at 15-1/2 yrs old last year, he tried to hang on ... I think they just want to keep us from getting upset.  So glad that you had time to spend with him to say Goodbye.

Travis  I used to have 2 W's...great dogs and family.  We lost our Golden in October 2010 and her ashes are still in my office.  The local vet came to our home and she passed in our bedroom with me singing to her.

John - neat idea about the house call with the vet. We had started to take Zig to the vet one last time right after he first had his sudden drop, but it was a weekend and decided to wait til Monday. GLAD we did!! He recovered enuff that he lasted about 5 more weeks, Altho he coudln't get around much, he would have spurts of energy and get up and go to the room I was in and lay down.

THANK YOU for the kind words from the othere who have lost or can appreciate the loss of a pet!!
