Color Trends and Optimism

What's happening to color trends? Have you noticed that the latest forecast for color 2013 is very muted, downplayed color.

Don't get me wrong..the colors are lovely, but seem less than energetic unveiling of what to expect.  My friend and journalist, Michelle Rafter, was commenting on the relationship between Fashion trend colors and the economy.  I could not agree more!

Looking back in 2007, the Color Forecast for Sherwin Williams was "Eclectic"..vibrant hues of pinks, oranges, yellows and purples.  There was hope in the air, and energy reflected in these intense ranges. Take a look at our Redesign projects from 2008 to see the palettes we were using

The year 2009 color trend was called "Evolution".  Similar colors to the electric 2008 groupings, these also displayed an upbeat mood.  They were, however tempered by the addition of words such as "nature inspired" and "earthy".

Since that time, the trend has been darker. The addition of black to the palettes, to create aubergines and mustardy yellows, for example became trendy.  Earth tones were replacing vibrancy, and grey backgrounds...everything...was grey!

Take a look at the blue greens and muted yellows and safe oranges. The new tones for 2013 are reminiscent of the 1950's post war optimism. Remember the 'sea foam' and 'harvest gold'?  Cautious hope for a better economy.

You must be a 'mid century modern' girl.  It might bring some extra 'happy' to synch these colors in your wardrobe and your home...I say go for it!
