NW Austin ~ Recycle old appliances for a chance to win some cash

Recycle your old working refrigerator or freezer by October 15th and you could win $500!

Austin Energy is buying old working refrigerators or freezers and will pay you a $50 rebate (limit 2 per household) and also provide free pick-up.  Sounds like a great deal to me! Call 1-800-452-8685 or go online to their website to schedule a free pick-up.  After doing that, you’ll need to send a picture of your appliance to donylle.seals@austinenergy.com and your name will be entered into a drawing for $500.00.

The prize money is courtesy of Appliance Recycling Centers of America, the company that picks up the appliance and recycles it for the Austin Energy Refrigerator Recycling Program.  This utility program began in 2005 and has recycled more than 23,000 refrigerators and freezers.  Approximately 98% of the materials and parts from appliances collected are recycled.

According to Austin Energy: next to heating, cooling and hot water heaters, refrigerators and freezers use more electric power than any other home appliance.  Old refrigerators use up to 40% more power than new energy efficient models.  Refrigerators located in garages use even more electricity because they are operating in hot temperatures.

As always, local information is brought to you as a courtesy by Dorie Dillard, Coldwell Banker United, your NW Austin Real Estate Consultant.

Good morning Dorie -

Getting back $500..... Wow!  I need to share this with PNM as they only offer $30 no matter the great shape or pristine the old appliance such as a refrigerator is.  Then right on the spot they put a sledge hammer through it before removing it.  They do this to prevent anyone else from unitizing the energy hungry appliance.

Hi Dorie,

This is a really good program to have. When I was performing weatherization energy audits for the state of Michigan, we were testing all the freezers and refrigerators for energy efficiency.

We replaced a lot of those units.

That saved the client's a ton of money in energy costs over the life of the frige.

Thanks for sharing the info.

Have a wonderful Sunday in Northwest Austin, Texas.

Best, Clint McKie

Great program. We have something similar way up here in the Northwoods. It really helps defray some of the costs of getting a more energy efficient model when there is incentive.

It looks like a very good time to get rid of the old refrigerator or freezer.  Have a very special day and an outstanding week.  Be sure to have your camera in hand to capture the special moments.

Dorie, What a good program. We usually have ours hauled away by the deliverer of the new appliance we purchase. I know that they recycle refrigerants and use them in service calls on other units.

Dorie, what an incredible program!  In Dallas it is difficult to dispose of large appliances, if you are not replacing them.  Some home owners have relics in their garages and no place to go with them. $50 is amazing.  I'm going to double check to see if out electric provider has a similar program that I don't know about.  Great information and post.

Dorie, when people think they may win at  a lottery it energizes them to recycle more...we have a similar program on frig's but not the bonus $500...a great idea to get those older energy suckers out of circulation..
