Testing Another "Find Images For Your Blogs - Free and Legal" Site.

Welcome to Wikimedia Commons. This site takes a little practice to learn to navigate and find an image that you might be looking for, but they do offer several thousand quality photos taken around the world. Licences vary, but most just require that you attribute the photo to the person who took the photo and uploaded it to Wikimedia. You can sort search results by country, state, topic, author, nature, science, earth, space, animals, etc, etc.

This is a photo of the terminal at Dulles airport in Sterling VA, most likely taken from the upper levels of a parking garage. If I needed a photo of Dulles, I wouldn't mind giving Joe Ravi attribution for this photo if I needed a photo like this on my blog or web site. It would take me at least 2-3 hours to take a photo like this myself, even though I have driven through that terminal hundreds of times.

Start at Wikimedia.org, then scroll down to the Wikimedia Commons tab if you're interested in checking out this source.

"When using this image under the Creative Commons Share-Alike License please attribute this image to the author, Joe Ravi, and include the acronym of the license CC-BY-SA 3.0 in a prominent location near the image."

Jeff I'm always surprised how many folks just take an image and then when someone complains about it's use they say "but I found it on the internet."  Ignorance of copyright doesn't excuse you when the demand letter arrives in your mailbox.

Thanks for the tip... I'm going to check this one out. And thanks for the reminder to watch what we use on our blogs! No one wants that lawsuit coming his way.

#1- Hi Cindy, I know. There still are a lot of people that think if it's on the internet, it's free to use. There really is no defense that I can think of for violating copyrights and terms of use. Those fines are too expensive to take the risk.

#2- Hi Gretchen, No problem. It's really not that hard to give someone attribution for their work. No one should take someone elses works and creations and present them as their own. You're correct, those lawsuits can add up to serious money.

Hey Jeff...

Sound advice for sure.  I always feel safer going the extra mile to take my own photos and © them.  Rather be safe than sorry.

Any idea how to copyright our own photos?   I put up a blog on my home home and I'm sure that the photos were taken by many...   Just curious.    Shanna

#4- Hi John, I know whaty you mean. i prefer to take my onw photos as well, but it's good to know of a few good sources where I can grab photo to use now and then.

#5- Hi Praful, You're welcome. I think you can find a good variety of photos on line. Just need to be sure to read terms of use, and give credit to photographer when required.

#6- Hi Shanna, Your photos are automatically copyrighted from the moment of creation. If you want to file a lawsuit against someone for using your photos, and/or using your photos for commercial purposes, go to www.copyright.gov to learn more. You could also watermark your photos. There are many FREE ones like picmarkr.com
