Adopting an older pet is one of the best things you can do for yourself. Yes, that's right, a gift you can give yourself. Older dogs and cats seldom get a second or third chance. When abandoned or abused they often find themselves in overcrowded shelters and many are put to death for being too little or too old, too big, or too something. It is terrible and heart breaking. I have rescued all my life and shelters and rescue groups are great places to find a wonderful companion who will love you without qualification, be ready to greet every new day with hope and happiness, and never ever forget that you saved them. They know, and they love unconditionally for the rest of their lives. There are more stories than I can tell, but the bottom line is always the same, helping an animal gives you more you give. If you live in or around New Jersey, try www.arf.petfinder.com , my rescue organization or check your local shelter and bring home a friend.
Good Morning Sheila, this is so true. There is nothing like an older animal. Giving them homes gives both parties a new lease on life.
Thanks for the post, I think anyone looking for a pet should go to a shelter first. We'd have more happy people and happy pets.
Have A Great Day
I had some wonderful clients who after buying a house, went to the shelter and asked to see the dogs that had been there the longest...they were not pretty...but they adopted two...and the two did not get along...bless my clients.
So the husband and wife each took one dog and moved into seperate bedrooms.
They hired a trainer to work with "the family"...they are now living happily after.
Love your blogs and I love senior dogs...
thank you.
Good morning friends and thank you for stopping by and leaving your comments and offering your support. I wish our animals felt this support and had forever homes to be in.
Hello Mona. It is so true. Giving an animal love and safety is a new lease on life for everyone.
Hi Doris. When I think of the great animals languishing in shelters my heart breaks. Rescue groups like mine pull as many as we can but it is never enough.
Hello Eve and Mike. Your story, your clients, fill my heart. What a beautiful thing to do and these are people I would like to know. You are very kind and I appreciate your support. Thank you!
Sheila
The unconditional love you receive from a pet is awesome. They are such great company. Glad you posted this info.
Good morning Sheila, I am living with a gang of adopted pets-3 cats and 2 dogs-all at my friend in Armonk's house and not only do they love my husband and me constantly, but they absolutely love each other. Wonderful morning wisdom.
Good morning Bobbie. It is such a wonderful thing to do and the love is the best.
Joanna, why am I not surprised. Pets are the best. Constant, reliable and loving always. Thank you for stopping by.
Sheila
Good morning Sheila -
We have some clients that have adopted three yes three older pups from local shelters. They have enjoyed good experiences each time. It takes a little extra TLC but the pups warm up and offer much love in return once they figure out they are loved and in their forever home.
I use to be a overflow foster home for dogs. Maybe I should consider that or an older pet. Starting tomorrow I am an Empty Nester and not ready.
Good morning Rob. I know you are an empty nester. Adopt an older dog and fill your heart. Sheila
Great post. And thanks for supporting the adoption of older pets. I am just worried about our two-year-old kitty right now.
Hello Cheryl. I know about the disabled guy and I hope you get another. Sheila
Sheila, I've had rescues and one special needs rescue. They all gave me gave me more than I could give, but especially Coco, my special needs girl. Just because an animal is old doesn't mean it should be thrown away.
Hi Elyse. Old is not a crime. Good for you. I hope your Dad is OK. Sheila
