Secret Summer | Henry Cowell State Park |Cheri Duc Trebbien, RealtorCalifornia Coastal Real Estate, Santa Cruz CA—According to the calendar, summer is officially over. Walking through Capitola Village to meet a client yesterday, the swell of people is noticeably gone, the town feels unhurried, there is parking again and the leaves are starting to pile up around the curbs.

But the weather? The weather still says summer.  According to www.weather.com, our days along the Central Coast should remain in the high 60s to low 70s. The tourists are gone. It is time for Santa Cruz and Monterey County to get outside and soak up the Central Coast's Secret Summer.

Elkhorn Slough | Cheri Duc Trebbien, RealtorThere are so many gorgeous natural locations to explore in our area and activities that we miss in order to avoid crowds. I want to encourage you to get out there, get active and enjoy the bounty that your community has to offer. Also, if the summer crowds kept you away, now is a great time to research Santa Cruz real estate and explore possible vacation homes or beach properties.

  1. Roaring Camp Railroads Harvest Fair | October 13 and 14th, 11 a.m., 12:30 p.m. & 2 p.m.
Roaring Camp is hosting their annual Harvest Fair with craft activities for adults and kids. Build your own scarecrow, enjoy a chuckwagon barbecue lunch and enjoy the steam trains.

  2. Welcome Back Monarchs Day | Oct 14th, 10:00am to 4:00pm
Natural Bridges State Park invites you to welcome the monarchs back to the park, their over-wintering habitat. The park hosts numerous activities including arts & crafts, active games for kids, live music and hand-cranked ‘monarch’ ice cream (pumpkin). The monarchs are a perfect example of a locals' only phenomenon. Enjoy them!

  3. Explore the Santa Cruz Mountains | Year Round
Grab a beach towel and a swimsuit! Along the banks of the San Lorenzo River, the swimming holes are as abundant as the redwoods. A simple hike via the 0.7-mile Ox Trail just south of Henry Cowell Redwoods State Park takes you to Garden of Eden.  Or for a more secluded section of the river with a wide sandy beach, take the first spur trail off of Ox Trail after crossing the railroad tracks.

  4. Kayak on the Elkhorn Slough | Year Round Rentals
Get out onto the Monterey Bay itself on a kayak. You can rent kayaks and paddle through the Elkhorn Slough without any previous experience. Every Thursday and Saturday night in September, The Kayak Connection is offering a Starlight Bioluminesence Tour where you will see the resident nocturnal marine life and enjoy the glow as you paddle through the bioluminesent waters of the summer bloom. Standard kayak and SUP rentals are available 7 days a week, year round.

  5. Monterey Bay Aquarium | Fall Hours: 10:00am to 4:00pm
Our world-renowned aquarium has an annual attendance of 1.8 million visitors. But during the Central Coast's Secret Summer, you can experience all 623 named species on display without braving the crowds. View the Ocean's Edge Wing’s 333,000-US-gallon (1,260,000 l) tank, in which the aquarium was the first in the world to grow live California Giant Kelp, from multiple floors within the Aquarium or view the stingrays, jellyfish, sea otters, bluefin and yellowfin tuna.

The Secret Summer of September and October offers beautiful weather to highlight your real estate, now is a great time to list a home for sale. This is also a great time to explore vacation homes or investment properties.
