Is Anyone Else Getting Fed Up?

I just read on the Internet that a college university was being sued over their pregame prayer ritual prior its football games. It seems that some anti-religious group feels the practice should be discontinued on the principle of “separation of church and state.”

The co-president of the group was quoted as saying, "This is a public university, not a Christian club. It's open to all comers and should be welcoming". When you're not religious or are of another faith and you get prayed at during events, it's really very grating. It's a sock in the gut for you to go for a sporting event and then be told to conform to someone else's religion."

Really, Ms Co-President? Are you that narcissistic that you think that, if a bunch of people are praying…you are getting prayed at? And that it is grating to you? Do you think for one moment that anyone is really spending their valuable time praying over you???

I ignore people every day who say and do things contrary to my belief system. I don’t bring suit. I don’t complain, or make a nuisance of myself. I don’t try to force my views on anyone. I don’t bring harm to anyone, nor insult anyone’s faith, or lack thereof. And the vast majority of you reading this don’t either.

Ms Co-President could you; for a brief moment, if you aren’t a person of faith, stand there and think about butterflies, or flowers, or ponies? I don’t even care if you stand. Just sit there and let the vast majority do what they wish to do without any interference from you! If you feel a “sock in the gut”, as you so over-the-top put it, perhaps watching a football game is just too stressful for you.

In the news these past several weeks, Christians and Jews have found their faith the focal point of other people’s rage. The media and our current administration gloss over this rage by blaming everything on a  You-Tube video, but make no mistake…it is our faith that is the basis for their hate. The sad fact of all this…this isn’t something that just started happening…it has been going on for decades.

In our effort to be politically correct, those of us of faith have remained silent. We have taken the higher road. We have allowed others to force their value system upon us. It has been us who have said we were sorry, we didn’t mean to offend.

Ms Co-President has attacked our faith through the courts; others have simply attacked us! The sad fact is that it is not Ms Co-President who is the problem…it is us. It is our fault, those of us who have allowed our faith to be trampled on. We have sat on our hands, and have said and done nothing. The lesson we learned regarding the playground bully has been conveniently forgotten. Let the bully have his way, and his actions will continue to get bolder, and meaner. Pretending that the bully isn’t there, or that he is mad about something, or someone else; does not make the bully vanish, nor correct the injustice.

I am reminded of this quote by Martin Niemöller, pulled from the ashes of World War Two. It deals with the methodical takeover of Europe by the Nazis.

First they came for the Socialists, and I did not speak out--
Because I was not a Socialist.

Then they came for the Trade Unionists, and I did not speak out--
Because I was not a Trade Unionist.

Then they came for the Jews, and I did not speak out--
Because I was not a Jew.

Then they came for me--and there was no one left to speak for me.

Sadly, history does repeat itself.  Insert “American: for the word Socialist. Insert the word “Christian” for the Trade Unionist. Sadly, the word “Jew” is relevant even today.

So, Ms Co-President…back to your original premise…this separation of church and state issue you so proudly hang your hat on. Go back and look it up in the history book, the separation of church and state was put in place to keep the government from interfering in religion, not the other way around!

Good morning Tom. So how do you really feel? I am in agreement with the poem, but also understand the point the woman made. If you walked a mile in anothers shoes. I think that Merry Christmas is nice , even though I don't participate in the holiday. I went to a Catholic college for awhile and wasn't offended by an opening prayer, even shared a Hebrew recitation when it was my turn. That said, I do understand the other sise but take your point about global silence.

And good morning to you dear Sheila,

I grew up Protestant, converted to Catholicism when I married my wife. My oldest son recently married a lovely Jewish woman, and he converted to Judaism. From my daughter-in-law, I was introduced to one of her family members, who is a Rabbi living in Israel. We have become almost like brothers. While we have our differences in how we approach our faith, we realize that we have more in common than what may divide us. Our friendship is born out of mutual respect for each other's faith...and our deep respect for God.

What I am talking about in this blog transcends a particular faith. We have but one God. I just seems absurd that a handful of people can ask the vast majority of us not to do something, just because they are uncomfortable. No one is asking them to pray to a particular faith, and they don't have to pray at all.

And the larger point to all of this is what you brought up about the global silence. Our country's recent shift in its lack of  support of Israel is deplorable. We seem to have reached a point where we are willing to give into the rock throwers...just to be left alone...forgetting that, one day they will come for the rest of us.

Hi Tom. I knew your background and I like and respect you which I believe you know. I get the poem and affirm it it however I also see the point of someone who is made to feel uncomfortable with faith, any faith in a public setting. We can discuss anything here. That is the beauty of this country. In third world countries things are not so good. Enjoy the wewekend and feel free to stop by my blog once inawhile. My best to Gina too.

Hi,

I noticed this was from a month ago, but I can't help but respond as it strikes a chord with me... I think slightly ridiculous to say that you " see the point of someone who is made to feel uncomfortable with faith, any faith in a public setting" and then say "we can discuss anything here"?! For people to see any time of faith and be uncomfortable is just like saything they are uncomfortable with anyone who is different from themself. Wouldn't you think it rather odd that someone say something like "I am a person of faith in _____ and I feel uncomfortable that you don't have that same belief, and I think you should show some faith to prevent my uncomfortable feeling." ? As long as it is not a harmful belief, it is absolutely stupid to tell someone to stop doing something they believe in so that the other person doesn't feel uncomfortable. For pete's sake, it's their beliefs, and no one should be so self centered as to ask someone else not to be themself, claiming that something that forms a part of the other person's identity is something that offends them.
