How's the Market Doing? . . They Really Want to Know.

I must have been asked that questions at least a dozen time today, and for some it wasn’t just a courtesy question coming from someone that knew me. People read so much about the real estate market, but they seldom have the chance to ask that question to someone they know that’s in the business.

A National statistic does nothing to assure a home owner that may be a year or two away from selling their home that they will be able to sell it and walk away with some of the money they were counting on for their retirement.

A page on the Internet does nothing for the homeowner that just had their hours cut at work and may have to sell their house to avoid a foreclosure.

When people see us and recognize us as real estate professionals, they are not being just courteous, they are genuinely concerned.

We should make an effort to know our markets not just for the buyers that are working with us, or for the sellers that we’re meeting with to get their listing. The friend, acquaintance or person that sees us standing in front of a house genuinely wants to know.

So, how’s the market doing in your area? Make sure you know, that’s what a professional would do.

Ed, The market is southern Utah is doing well. Prices are slightly climbing and inventory is 25% less than it was a year ago, interest rates are still very low...NOW is the time to buy. That is my professional opinion!

Here in Destin, Florida the inventory is going down and prices seem to be starting to rise. This is a good thing!

The problem is the national trend means nothing when you drill down to a city or neighborhood.  The old addage is true, real estate is local and professionals know the local information.

You are absolutely right Ed. We know the sales trainer guru's tell us to always answer "its doing great what are your plans?", but like you stated when people ask, they are genuinely concerned and we think they do deserve an honest answer. This year we have had an up and down market, busy one week, quiet the next, but properties are selling and if they look good they are selling for good prices. Very good thought provoking blog Ed.

I completely agree! After spending the day at a local festival, I was suprised that almost every old friend I ran into asked me about the market. Only another week and we'll be able to report on the (fabulous) 3Q sales stats!

In my previous career, when people asked ‘How is work?”  ……. My answer did not impact them in a personal financial way ……. But in real estate, you are right they want to know, because it impacts them …….

This is a great topic Ed. Everyone wants to know how things are everywhere. There are many concerned with the welfare of the economy as it affects them or their children or their friends.

Ed, very well made point. Homeowners are constantly evaluating their property's value compared to news they hear or read. It's nice when they have a local agent who knows what they're talking about give them more specifics. Well done.

Ed, some how I missed this one, but just saw it on Al & Peggy's reblog.  You are right on target with this, people expect us to know our business and our market, and we have to be ready to answer their questions whether they are a client or not.

Ed -- That's why doing market reports are so important. I am sure with all those great, consistent reports you do that you are able to recite numbers and trends and be a truly valuable area resource.  It's what is expected of us.

Ed, I missed this post, and I am glad I found it. It is because of ActiveRain I have that information at my fingertips, and in my head. I send them out to people, I know my market inside and out, I can tell people who ask the question. And you are so right, often when people ask they are asking because they need to understand.
