It has been an unbelievable Mosquito season in 2012 and it's not over yet, especially not in the Alexandria Pineville area.
In 2012, there have been 3,142 cases of the virus reported with 134 deaths as of Sept. 18th.
Two thirds of all West Nile virus cases have been come from seven states - Texas, Mississippi, Michigan, South Dakota, Louisiana, Oklahoma, and California - and almost 40 percent of all cases have been reported from Texas.
There are ways to PROTECT YOURSELF FROM THE WEST NILE VIRUS!
- Stay indoors during peak times....Dusk and Dawn. These times are when the mosquitos are out and about!
- If you do have to be out, it is best to wear Long Sleeves and Pants, loose closthing that is light colored.
- Protect yourself by using inspect repellent that contains DEET, Picaridin, or Oil of Lemon Eucalyptus.
- Get rid of any standing water around your home. Make sure to check flower pots, water dishes and pet feeding bowls. Any standing water that is not drained frequently can be a breeding ground for mosquitos!
