One of the great things about living in the Historic Neighborhoods of Denver is that there are few if any big chain restaurants around. Instead we have great independent restaurants that will usually develop a loyal following or they simply don't make it.
Well, in the Historic Bonnie Brae Neighborhood of Denver there is a new kid in town! Right across the street from the Historic Bonnie Brae Tavern and just a half a block north of the famous Bonnie Brae Ice Cream Shop is a great new addition to the neighborhood...Grillin'Wings & Things. Located at 723 South University Blvd, Grillin'Wings & Things couldn't be at a better location if the owner had tried!
Grillin'Wings & Things is right where a deli used to be. Then there were a few sandwich shops, none of which lasted very long. I wandered into Grillin'Wings & Things after showing property in the nearby Belcaro neighborhood. As I was driving home along Exposition, I was thinking about how sad it was that there weren't any great wings places in the 'hood. OK, we've got Pizza Hut wings and Wing Stop, but neither can get you really excited.
As I was sitting at the light at Exposition and University, a new store front sign caught my eye. After making a quick left hand turn, there was Grillin'Wings & Things!
As I walked in, I noticed several patrons sitting in front of four large screen TV's munching on wings. Painted a bright eye catching red, the interior of Grillin'Wings & Things is warm and friendly.
The manager, Chris Swanson, greeted me with a great big warm, smile, then regretfully told me that they were out of "pig wings", which are their version pork ribs. Too bad, I would have loved to have tried them!
It seems that Grillin'Wings & Things has had such a great opening that they ran out of their ribs! Later, while enjoying the deliciously hot chicken wings (washed down with a cold Blue Moon) Chris and the owner told me that they not only ran out of ribs, but that business had been so brisk over the weekend that they had to do a quick "wings run" and go out and purchase an additional 800 or so chicken wings.
If you are in Bonnie Brae, you've got to check this place out. BUT, if you go to facebook and like Grillin'Wings & Things then you will get 5% of your bill. Not bad!
At Grillin'Wings & Things you can have your choice of several flavors. There is:
Medium
Hot
Fire Hot
Honey Hot
BBQ
BBQ Wild
Spicy Garlic Chili
Sweet Ginger Thai
Asian Bite
Teriyaki
Sweet Chili
Mango Habanero
Jerk (dry)
Cajun (dry)
The one thing that I really liked about the wings at Grillin'Wings & Things was that they offered to sear the wings on the grill after the sauce goes on but before they hit your plate. The result is an extra layer of flavor that I found to be very appealing! I also tried something that I had never even heard of before. Deep fried corn on the cob. OMG was that AWESOME. They take an ear of corn and dip it in a corn bread batter then deep fry it. It comes to you hot and delicious.
Seriously, check this place out, it rocks! Click here to see the menu.
