I'm a big fan of public art. Nothing is more delightful than to come across some unexpected item of creative whimsy in the course of daily business.
Yesterday I went to the North Hills Mall in North Raleigh on a very mundane errand, in search of a new pair walking shoes from Omega Sports. I parked my car and walked across the street and what should I encounter but a pink cow! How very novel! I kept my eyes open then, and found four more of these life-size cow statues. You can guess which one was in front of the movie theater. I think the scary-looking one is painted in honor of the Mexican holiday Dia de los Muertos, Day of the Dead, November first. As for the one decorated with dogwood flowers, she must be a Southern Cow Belle.
There are 80 decorated cows around the Triangle, on display for three months and then destined to be auctioned to benefit NC Children's Hospital. You can download a map or, if you prefer, an app for your mobile phone to help you find them all. Visit www.cowparadenc.com for maps, appls, and information
