With school back in full swing, the days getting shorter and the leaves starting to change colors there's no denying fall is in the air and it's time to start thinking about securing your vacation home and winterizing it to protect your investment as well as your primary residence.

Pemco Insurance has provided the following useful tips to help you get ready for the winter. Many of these tips are also useful around your primary residence as well.

Some of the things to do around your primary residence to winterize would include disconnecting garden hoses, insulating pipes in the crawlspace and attic, checking the sump pump and cleaning your gutters. Trimming dead limbs from trees and storing your patio furniture will prevent damage during a wind storm.

For more information on protecting your home during the winter contact your local insurance agent, handyman or even better have a seasonal home inspection done. You don't have to be buying or selling your home to have an inspection. It's a great way to make sure everything in your home is functioning properly. I use ACE Home Inspections for my seasonal inspections, 206.755.6605.

Realtors this is great information to pass on to your clients as well.

Sometimes banks winterize homes after the pipes froze. Always inspect the plumbing even if the house was winterized.
