It's easy to have a large closet that just seems to swallow junk and never spit it back out. Here are a few tips to get that room in line and make it into an organized space in which to store pieces of your life.
As in a lot of things we talk about on this blog, one of the first steps is to clean out the closet! Start moving things out, and if you don't recognize it as your own, or you know you haven't used it in the last decade, add it to the "throw away-donate-sell" pile. With any luck this pile will be larger than the "keeper" pile, and you'll have lots of leftover closet space when you're finished.
Look at all that lovely empty space you've uncovered! Before you start putting stuff back in there, grab a piece of paper and a pencil. Make a list of what you have, and then organize the list into categories. For example--winter clothing, summer clothing, craft and sewing supplies, holiday decorations, family games, and of course, the ever-popular miscellaneous.
Now decide how you want to store the different categories of items. If it's summer when you're doing your closet makeover, then take the summer clothes and put them in your everyday closet. Then, bring any winter items that are still there back to this closet. Every season, you can easily move your current-season clothes to your everyday closet while putting the out-of-season stuff in this closet.
Clothes you'll probably want to hang, but other items may need to be boxed or put into see-through totes that would then most likely be best stored on shelving. If your closet doesn't have shelves, hanging rods or racks, you may need to take a trip to your local home improvement store to see what's available. Don't forget to check out the rolling see-through plastic drawer units for smaller items, and racks for things like shoes and belts.
Be sure to label any boxes on the side or end so you'll know what's in them. Put items you seldom use such as your punch bowl or once-a-year holiday decorations on upper shelves. And don't forget you may be able to use the back of the closet door as a place to install shoe racks or hanging storage pockets.
