The University of Colorado, better known as CU Boulder, is located in the city of Boulder and is a public research university. It's regarded as the crown jewel in the University of Colorado System. As stated by the Public Ivies: America's Flagship Public Universities, it's regarded as being on the list of thirty "Public Ivy League" universities. The university is comprised of nine colleges and schools offering over one hundred fifty programs with an enrollment of approximately 30,000 students. It has the distinction of having developed 10 Nobel laureates and has acquired over $450 million for research in 2010 originating from a number of leading institutions.
Based just south of the Pearl Street Mall, the main campus is made up of academic and residential buildings as well as research facilities. The University Of Colorado Museum Of Natural History houses one of the most comprehensive natural history collections in the Rocky Mountain area and represents the fields of Anthropology, Botany, Entomology, Paleontology, and Zoology. It's based in the Henderson building, which is named after its first curator. The CU Heritage Center is located in Old Main, the very first building that was built on campus. It has 7 galleries that exhibit memorabilia associated with the faculty and alumni. Fiske Planetarium and Science Center boasts a planetarium dome and offers laser shows, live concerts, and an on-going series of public programs. Additionally, it has a hands-on science museum with interactive exhibits and art on space themes.
A big building located on the north edge of the campus is the Macky Auditorium. It offers a variety of plays, lectures, and musical performances. The building has a selection of different architectural aspects of various parts of the world that caught the attention of CU President Baker at the outset of the twentieth century. The design is principally Neo-Gothic and makes use of exactly the same material red sandstone and red tiles as the rest of the campus. It was restored in 1986 to enhance the seating and also the carpeting. Macky houses two departments, both in the College of Music: the Jazz Studies Department and the Choral Department.
