When life gives you rock.......

If you live in Pueblo West you have come to know the word Shale. It's hard to escape. If you buy a lot to build on part of the inspection process is hiring a back hoe and digging a hole. This hole will tell the builder if the lot is build able. The county health department then inspects the hole and decides if and what kind of septic system can be put in and at what price.

Shale

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Shale is a fine-grained sedimentary rock whose original constituents were clays or muds. It is characterized by thin laminae breaking with an irregular curving fracture, often splintery and usually parallel to the often-indistinguishable bedding plane. This property is called fissility. Non-fissile rocks of similar composition but made of particles smaller than 1/16 mm are described as mudstones. Rocks with similar particle sizes but with less clay and therefore grittier are siltstones.

Shale is the most common sedimentary rock.

I bought a house once in Rockville Maryland and it had this cool rock protruding from the side yard .....turned out it was like Mt. St. Helen in size underneath so it became a rock garden of sorts. To me the shale would add hometown beauty to a yard but I guess digging a foundation could be an issue :-)

3C - I once had a woman ring the bell at the model house asking if she could have the shale on the next lot over. A hole had been dug and the shale was exposed. Shale is sometimes regarded as a problem, both of digging and for hauling away. Steal all you want - there's more!

Dena, those are some very creative uses for something that you seem to have a lot of.  The way I look at it is, if you have to live with it, then you might as well put it to use.

Dena - you always come up with the most creative posts.  A lesson well learned about Shale and creative uses.  My son Diego would have a ball throwing rocks there.

KK - Maybe, I don't know where Dave lives. This house is a rocks throw from the Lake.
