The latest and the greatest. Would you stand in line for a phone?

By
Real Estate Broker/Owner with Richard Weisser Realty

How badly do you want the latest and the greatest? Would you stand in line for a phone? After being bombarded by the commercials with all of the anxious buyers queuing up to be the first to get the latest and the greatest phone du jour, I began to wonder:

Do people actually do that? Is it a reality or just a Madison Avenue exaggeration?

As for me personally, I prefer the tried and true, fully tested technologies that have stood the test of time. I HATE tech support. I LOVE technology that doesn’t need to be supported.

I would NEVER stand in line for any consumer product. As a matter of fact, on many occasions I have abandoned a purchase simply because the line at the cashier was too long.

And very often, I am grateful that the understaffed retailer gave me the extra time to “think about it!”

Because inevitably I think that I really don’t need the product after all!

Good morning Richardm

I am with you, waiting in line - no way.  The Samsung ads are fun, poking fun at the public waiting in lines for the iPhone...

Hi Richard , I agree with you there is no way I would stand on line for a phone or most anything else for that matter. It reminds me of the holiday shoppers on Black Friday. Thanks, but no thanks

Wallace...

Or just mail it to me! Thanks so much.

Joan...

Funny side topic ... we have always said "IN" line but I know that in some areas people say "ON" line. Either way I will not be doing it anytime soon! Thanks.

This will date me but, I have to admit, I had to stand in line for a Cabbage Patch doll.  We found it in the attic a few weeks, it doesn't work and is broken.  Never have and never will stand in line for a phone!

Richard, My two years old Blackberry is battle scarred from being dropped multiple times, but it still makes the phone calls I need, and while not really a very proficient Net access phone, it does the essentials well enough that I'll keep it for now.  And standing in a line for hours for a fresh off the assembly line phone?  Not going to happen.

I didn't have to wait in line since I'm not eligible to upgrade until mid February. But I might have if I had been eligible.

Richard, I'm with you in that one. It always surprises me how many people seem to even have the time to stand in line to buy something that will probably be available in the not to far away future at a better price without the wait.

I don't wait in line for any piece of technology.  The "fan boys" who just love a particular brand (to remain nameless) seemed to gush over the latest phone only to find it had manufacturing flaws, software issues, etc and yet they still wouldn't concede the phone is...just a phone.

Absolutely not, Richard.  I definitley prefer for the bugs to be worked out on somebody else's dime.  I might jump on board in a couple months or a year, but I have no desire to sit on the phone with tech support.  Oy!  I'm with you on that.
