It's Autumn and the Great Smoky Mountains are calling!

Did you know that the Appalachian Mountains are considered to be among the oldest peaks on the planet?

Thrust ever upwards by the force of the great Continental Collision, the mountains rose into the tallest and most imposing chain ever formed.

Millions of years of weather and gravity have eroded the mountains into their present incarnation.

And while they are far from being the highest, the Southern Appalachians are certainly among the most beautiful and eco-diverse mountains to be seen anywhere.

Even more so in Autumn, when they explode with color!

The mountains are calling.

I must answer.

What a great display of colors of the SmokyMountains ...it really is not autumn here yet but the cold snap that is coming in will change all of that.

Richard, Our Smokey Mountains have been a favorite of mine since childhood. Great memories of rock jumping in the creeks are still like yesterday.

Richard,

Thanks for the photos. We don't get a real change in color here in the fall.

Ginny...

It's been a strange year as the leaves started turning early but now seem to be "on hold!" Thanks so much.

Sussie!

MORE beautiful! Lol and have a great Sunday, my friend!

Debbie...

It is a beautiful part of the country, that's for sure! Thanks for "jumping in" this morning.

Carol...

Now you need to do it! Thanks.

Peter...

Your area is on the edge of the Appalachians ... and a hop, skip and a jump to the mountains! Thanks.

Hi Richard - Having grown up in your neck of the woods, I spent a lot of my younger years in those mountains - they are indeed beautiful, particularly at this time of year, and there is a sense of ancient about them.

Thanks for the lesson on the Smoky Mountains. I did not know they were so old. Our Cascade Mountains here in Washington State are considered young. Love the poem and the photos. I look forward to more of your photos this Autumn season.

Beautiful photo.  I sure miss seeing the changing of the leaves.  We get a bit here but nothing like the falls I spent in Michigan.  Hope to do it again sometime in the future.
