CFL bulbs, which are environmentally friendly because they cut energy use by up to 70 percent, contain trace amounts of mercury. Exposure to mercury can be harmful to the nervous system, so the EPA advises against tossing bulbs in the trash, just in case they break. Intact bulbs are completely safe. Instead, ask your recycling facility how to dispose of them. You can also drop off spent CFLs in designated areas at Home Depot or like stores. Luckily, since these bulbs last an average of two to four years, you'll rarely need to get rid of them.
