Test Your Green IQ, Part 2

By
Real Estate Agent with RE/MAX Platinum

Here is the second Green IQ Quiz:

2. Compact fluorescent bulbs contain mercury, so you shouldn't throw them away. TRUE!

CFL bulbs, which are environmentally friendly because they cut energy use by up to 70 percent, contain trace amounts of mercury. Exposure to mercury can be harmful to the nervous system, so the EPA advises against tossing bulbs in the trash, just in case they break. Intact bulbs are completely safe. Instead, ask your recycling facility how to dispose of them. You can also drop off spent CFLs in designated areas at Home Depot or like stores. Luckily, since these bulbs last an average of two to four years, you'll rarely need to get rid of them.

Kristin, I really don't buy in to the whole Green Thing, for this reason. The main energy user of your home is the A/C or Heat and Range or Dryer. Light bulbs account for less than 10% of consumption.

The point is...whatever we can do on whatever level...replace appliances...become more pro-active with energy...it ALL adds up...and makes the bills go down !

I always look for ways to cut my energy bills. All but one of the light bulbs is an energy efficient light bulb.

Kristin, that is so true! They make new fluorescent tubes that have green tips on them that are safe for disposal, but I haven't seen any of the compact, or like I like to call them "curly Q" bulbs that are disposable. I have converted all my regular bulbs to them, I like em!
