There's More Than One Way To Get To Heaven

Tragedy struck the Rivers household on Sunday. Our grandchildren, Izzy and Olivia, had recently got their first pets, a pair of goldfish, and as is traditional with goldfish, one of them "went to heaven" pretty quickly. Izzy will be four next week and this was her first introduction to the concept of mortality - Ollie isn't quite a year old, so since she can't count yet, she probably hasn't noticed anything amiss.

Our daughter-in-law Rose helped Izzy process the experience by writing the caption for her commemorative drawing as per Izzy's instructions:

The Road to Heaven

I think she'll be okay.

Is THAT the pathway to heaven for fish. I guess mine won't go there, my goldfish are as big as my hand now (8 years old) and they would stop up the toilet.

Oh, by the way, mice don't want to go to heaven. Tried to flush a mouse down once but it kept treading water. I had to set him free--far from my house. Really.

Poor Izzy! Pets are good for kids in so many ways, not the least which is the tough life lessons they provide. Here's hoping Fish #2 doesn't need to go to the toilet any time soon. One loss is enough for now no doubt.

Dick,

What a charming story!  We built two koi ponds at our house in Brentwood (LA).  The upper one was stocked with lovely koi, upon which the birds of prey descended and ate the gourmet treats therein.  Our lower one was problematic as the PH balance was off wack. Several fish died, at which point we decided to take the last one out and gave him a special environment suitable in a circulating tank...We left for a trip and our housesitter was a fish expert and promised to keep him safe and sound,,,yes he checked out to heaven while we were away...like your daughter she flushed him to heaven...no more koi ponds for us. LOL.  A

Hi Everyone and thanks for your comments. Izzy is, of course, still upset about her sister's fish, but Dave & Rose handled it well (at least as well as they could have without us being there to interfere), and life will go on for those of us who haven't been flushed yet. But it's missing moments like this that make being an absentee grandparent suck.

Dick, It is devastating to a child to lose a pet or something else close to her. I hope she will get over it soon and only have good memories of her fishes.

I think there is another lesson here...you have to go through a lot of S&^T to get to heaven.  And, maybe people will learn that the pearly gates are really a REWARD.

Thanks for the laugh and the lesson.  And, both your grandaughters are stunning!

Dick:  We had a few such tragedies at our house too when our boys were little.  It's so very traumatic for them.  And now, with being a grandparent twice over, I'm sure we'll soon be revisiting this issue again.  Life coming full circle, grandpa ...

No fun.. I remember being a kid and experiencing both fish and then dogs pass on.. hard to deal with. and hard to watch kids experience it too. You should be glad that mom and dad handled it well .. and you at a distance..

It's nice that Izzy can process this with her understanding.  Some parents will go to lengths to not deal with mortality (they'll get another goldfish) Yup, down the toilet to heaven is a wonderful way to put it.  She's adorable.

Okay, Dick -- is that one or two flushes to get to Heaven?  Just in case, all of those other ways I follow don't work out....

Dick~ I never had any fish as a kid, so I never had the "flushing" experience and none of my grandkiddos have fish, and after this, I don't think I'll be getting them any!

Dick ~ Precious, I remember those days. And then there was one fish we found during carnival clean-up detail with the cub scouts. The gray goldfish laying in the grass still alive, it had been storming all night, we took care of it and it grew to be the biggest goldfish we ever had.  ---- ><B
