So, I was reading through my parenting magazine this morning, and I came across an article that struck me and inspired me!!!

Growing up, my parents did not have a lot of money.  There were 5 children and both of my parents worked full time to make it.  I can remember times when I was a little disappointed as a young child, because I didn’t get that ONE thing I really wanted for my birthday or for Christmas.  I can remember my parents actually breaking the news to me that “there is no Santa” in order to spare my disappointment come Christmas morning because they didn’t have the funds that year to go all out and my 7 year younger sister and 8 year younger brother were still young enough to really be impacted by the loss of Santa (although, looking back I feel like it was probably time I knew anyways).

As a mother of 2 children, and being a little more fortunate financially, I have been able to provide way more for my own children than I ever had (I think that is what we all hope for – regardless of our circumstances).   Needless to say, my children have WAY MORE THAN THEY COULD EVER POSSIBLY need.  I work with my daughter around the holidays to help her understand that she is very fortunate (she is 8 years old).  We donate things to charity’s to help her understand that there are little children that don’t have as much or anything for that matter.  For instance, under her dresser, she still has toys – UNOPENED – from LAST Christmas.  Most were gifts from others but it makes you stop and think sometimes.

So back to the article I was reading … it talked about having birthday parties or holiday parties for your children with a charity theme.  For instance, a “DO GOOD” party – one idea was to adopt a solider that is serving overseas.  Have each guest bring an item to put in your care package – in lieu of a gift for the occasion.  Another idea was an animal non-profit them – where the guests donate pet food and items.

As I was reading it – it truly inspired me.   One thoughtful act can go so far in the lives of others.  I plan to implement a party like this ASAP.   I know my daughter would be inspired, I know she will own the idea and use her creativity to plan, organize and pick her charity.  It is such a win win and I encourage each of you to consider it in the future as well!
