Winterizing Your Home In Washington DC Metro

Winterizing Your Home In Washington DC Metro

New condos in DC

A surprising amount of damage can result from a homeowner's failure to winterize their home, especially in cold climates like Washington DC which can experience below-freezing temperatures. If you've never seen freeze-related damage, trust that you never want to! Here are the steps you can to take to protect your home during winter months.

HVAC Check

Have a pro perform a furnace inspection and duct cleaning before you switch the heat on for the season

Keep three months' supply of furnace filters and change monthly

Replace your old thermostat for an efficient programmable thermostat

    Bleed radiator valves

Fireplace and Chimney Inspection and Maintenance

Late summer/early fall is a great time to have your annual chimney and fireplace inspection

Buy fuel and/or firewood and store at least 500 feet away from the home in a dry place

Arrange a chimney sweep and any repairs necessary

If you don't already have a cap on the chimney to block birds and animals from nesting, install ASAP

Doors and Windows

Apply weather stripping to doors where necessary to block cold air from entering the home

    Caulk windows

Cover basement windows with weather wrap

Remove screens and install storm windows

Prime and paint exposed wood on the exterior of the home

Roof

Inspect roof, gutters & downspouts for inconsistencies, missing or loose shingles, flashing or tiles

Add extra insulation to the attic if needed and apply evenly

Clean out gutters and use a strong hose spray through downspouts to flush debris

Install leaf guards on the gutters

Install downspout extensions to direct water away from the home

I used to live in DC for about 7 years.

Looking at the pictures and reading your post makes me ever so grateful to be in California again.  :-)

Fall is the best time of year in DC -- can't beat it.

Hella, that's true, some seasonal home maintenance is necessary regardless of location. Enjoy the holidays in balmy California!

Tni, agree, fall is wonderful in DC!  Love spring too, as long as it's not icy!  Have a happy holiday and a successful 2013!

Susan, it is 70 degrees here and just looking at those pictures makes me want to curl up in a blanket.  We do have very brief periods of freezing temps, so good advice you have given, even for the lower south.

Susan, I like the reminder for people to have their chimney checked on an annual basis.  Chimney caps are important in Dallas.  Many homeowners have interesting visitors when there is no cap and screen to keep the visitors out of the chimney.

Dana, we're getting a little Christmas Eve snow here this morning so your 70 degrees sounds mighty inviting! I was in TX once when there was snow on the ground but we typically don't think of snow and Texas together. Enjoy your warm holiday and have a great 2013!

Sharon: You are so right!  "Interesting visitors" Lol! Only Santa belongs in there  : )  Have a happy holiday and successful 2013!
