View Fall Foliage By Water

Smith Mountain Lake is beautiful year-round, but it is particularly striking in autumn. The rustic browns, yellows and reds of this time of year reflect on the water, surrounding viewers with breathtaking natural beauty. Local television network WDBJ7 recently highlighted Smith Mountain Lake as one of the top five locations to take in fall foliage in Southwestern Virginia. We heartily agree. And don’t just gaze at the scenery from the shoreline, it’s still warm enough to get out on a boat for the best vantage point - on the water.

As WDBJ7 points out, boat rental may be less expensive this time of year, making it an ideal time to do a family boat outing with camera in hand. Head toward the SML Dam, snapping photos along the way. Dock at a marina for a quick family portrait. Pack some food, wear sweatshirts to guard against the cooler air and don’t forget the all-important lake map provided by marinas and the Smith Mountain Lake Chamber of Commerce. Or if you’re more in the mood for a guided tour, check out the Virginia Dare 19th Century side wheeler replica. A cruise on the Virginia Dare would be a seasonal highlight.
