Curtains - Should They Stay or Go When Selling Your Home?

Kathy Nielson makes a great point about whether or not to keep curtains and more often than not the answer is to go!

If your windows have molding or casing around them, show off this architectural detail. If they don't, then consider adding singla panels or sheers, pulled off to the sides, allowing as much light as possible to show through..

Also remember to make the windows look as large as possible that rods should, when possible, be hung high and wide.

Curtains - Should They Stay or Go When Selling Your Home?

Short answer - GO!

For the record, I don't hate curtains. In fact, every single window in my own home has some sort of window treatment. However, when I'm staging homes throughout metro Atlanta, 99% of the time, I'll ask that they be removed.

Here's why:

  • Curtains block light.  When selling your home, you want to bring as much light in as possible.
  • It blocks the view of the outside (see example below).
  • Depending on the window treatment, it can set the tone of the home (which may be good or bad)

In one of our more recent stagings, we asked that the curtains be removed. Again, no surprise given that I make that request for almost every home we stage.

Here's what the home looked like with curtains and without furniture and accessories. Yes. It's a beautiful home!

Here's the same room after the curtains were removed and after we brought in our furniture and accessories.

As you can see, there's a totally different vibe. While the furniture and accessories made a huge difference, try picturing this room (furnished and accessorized) with the curtains up. Would we have gotten the same look and feel? Not likely.

In summary, when selling your home, let as much light in as possible. Don't let the cost of the window treatment (some, I know, have paid lots of money) dictate whether or not they should stay or go.
