In last weekend's Star News newspaper there was a large advert shining light on a new program available at the Elk River Library. I was a little jealous that it wasn't around six years ago and then remembered that I had something even bigger to celebrate.
From the time of my first son's birth we have read every night as he's gone to sleep. We have sifted thousands of books through our home EVERY year since.
At first I looked at this advert and thought, "Oh my gosh! How is that possible?" And then I knew. For six years we've gone to the library at least once a week (most weeks twice). Every night we have read 3-20 books (yes, t.w.e.n.t.y.... though it isn't common). Even at 3 books a night that would be more than 1000 per year. Geesh! Who knew.
I am sooooooo thankful that I love reading. I am thankful that it's a gift that I can pass down to my children. It blesses me when they sit in the back of the car and page through their favorites, and when I find them hanging out on their beds in middle of the day sounding out words together. It touches on my creative when I see the kids looking at the pictures and making up new stories for books that have already been told.
We have long surpassed picture books at bedtime and have begun digging into long chapter books. They are all truly as much fun for me to read as for them to hear. We often end our evenings with giggles and laughter as we anticipate where the stories will go tomorrow night.
The library has it right. A thousand books sounds like a true mission, but it only touches the horizon of what's out there for reading material. The number seems very high, but it's very very doable.
On that note... I'm off to pick up my latest find and see where the adventure takes me tonight. Seeing as I'm reading non-fiction right now? It's probably going to be with a head full of wonderful ideas and thoughts to munch on while I sleep.
If you are moving in the near future and want to know what reading resources might help your family? Let me know.. I'd be happy to share what I've found!
