His Name was Rock....

By
Services for Real Estate Pros with Referral Group Incorporated

His name was Rock and I can't stop crying for him. He was at Animal Care and Control in New York and he was euthanized, killed, two days ago. He wasn't a cute and fury little pup, but his eyes begged to be loved and now he is gone. Every day thousands of good and needy dogs and cats are "put down" by government agencies. The story told is that there isn't room, money ot interest in these animals. The reality is that people don't care enough to rescue, they buy from pet stores who promote puppy mills whose cruelty is unimaginable and whose ongoing business kills. Yes I am angry but mostly, I am sad. There are so many, too many, great pets waiting who will suffer and eventually join Rock because people are too short sided to save them. If you ever talked about adopting, do it today to save another Rock before it is too late. His name was Rock and he deserved to live.

DO NOT call the shelter and say you are adopting unless you truly intend on physically going to the shelter to adopt the dog. It ties up phones lines and is a waste of the staff's time to explain the adoption procedure over the phone for someone who is purposely not going to show up. They need every free second of their time to answer calls, assist actual adopters, process intakes, and care for the animals. More importantly, they will note the dog’s file that an adopter is en route which will prevent an actual adopter from saving the dog. This is considered a "fake adoption" hold and that is how dogs fall through the cracks and end up being killed.

For more information on a particular dog, email adoption@nycacc.org but ONLY if serious about adopting, and ONLY if you are able to GO TO the shelter in-person. Please do not email for status updates... the only thing you will accomplish is spamming their in boxes and causing REAL adopter emails to go un-noticed. Contact the NYC ACC at (212) 788-4000 for further automated instructions

Well I also think that some of the certain "breeds" are euthanized more than others. This dog looked scared to death and my heart just breaks for him. The only consolation is that he is Over the Rainbow playing with all my animals who have gone to that place. Humans are cruel and until we stop the cruelty more of the innocent animals will be abused and abandoned. Thanks for bring this forward. We have 3 rescued dogs, 3 rescued cats, and only one pure bred Golden.

Sheila, I know what you mean but it does help the healing process even just a little to maybe think their spirits are still happy.

Hi Will, but I disagree. People are not proactive. Do you have a dog? If not go adopt one today...if you do, get another. I have three rescues, and if my house were not on the market....but alas it is too late. Thanks for stopping by.    Sheila

The sadness never ends, does it?  The reality is we just can't take them all in, and people just don't care enough to demand an end to puppy mills and back yard breeders. Nor do they care enough to adopt these sweet souls.  Out of sight, out of mind. If it were up to me, there would be a daily veiwing on all TV news channels of the animals in the shelters and the public would have to be made aware of which ones were scheduled to be killed the next day.  Even the use of the word euthanasia, tenderly hides the fact that they are KILLED. Poor Rock. I don't know about the Rainbow Bridge thing either, although I really want to.  But one thing I do know is he is no longer scared, no longer sad, and no longer betrayed by the humans he tried so hard to love.  Blessed be Rock. If there is peace to be found somewhere, I hope you find it.  So sorry Sheila.

Oh man, this story breaks my heart. There is really no end to the cruelty bestowed upon animals, by a so-called civilized society. Honestly, I don't know what else to say, there is little that can make those of us who love animals feel better about this...

Sheila,

That makes me very sad and Rock as you said had the eyes of a poor dog that just wanted someone to love him.Gosh this is such a sad situation and killing all these dogs and cats is deplorable.

The Katy dog park is  a great place and they changed from last year's custume contest to just a party.

Hi Sheila your story is so compelling and I do hope people pay attention.  You can see it in his eyes all he wanted is a home where people loved him and he could love them back.

Sheila, I couldn't get this post out of my head and so appreciate your courage for working through the grief and bringing out the message.

You are featured because people need to know that fostering, caring and adopting of stray and homeless animals isn't just about puppies, kittens and sweet fuzzy critters...it's about heartbreak, despair and hope...always hope.

Missed this post, but saw where Mona wrote about it today and popped over here.  And now I'm crying.  I'm proud to have 6 rescue babies in my life.  I am so thankful that we have a local humane society that takes them from our shelter before they are killed.  I support with donations both our shelter (because very kind people work there who really make an effort) and the humane society that actually helped me get a puppy neutered once upon a time when I had a financial need.  I suppose we will always have a house full of animals.

I have 5 rescues and volunteer at the shelter. I wish I had more space so I could take them all in. Rock's eyes are haunting. They really were begging to be loved :o(

Hello Mona. I can't get him out of my head either. I cry just seeing him. Your support means a lot. Thank you.

Hi Tammy. I know who you are and I understand your kindness and generosity and kindness. This really hurt and still does. I support a number of groups but in NYC they kill more than they adopt and yjrtr just aren't enough rescue groups and people to foster. Tragic.

Hi Patty. I know you too and appreciate what you do too. Tough, tough, tough.

Hi Gay. It is hard to open this post to respond because when I see his face the tears come again. Money can help, but make sure you give to a rescue group or a non kill shelter. My group is www.arf.petfinder.com  Thanks.     Sheila
