Construction Starts For New Sarasota Shopping Mall! Groundbreaking ceremonies were held yesterday for the new Mall at University Town Center. The new mall will be the first to be built in Sarasota in 35 years.
Originally announced over five years ago and put on hold due to economic conditions, the new Mall at University Town Center will contain 880,000 square feet and is scheduled to open in October of 2014. The upscale mall will include a Macy's, Dillard's and Saks Fifth Avenue and more than 100 other specialty stores. There are rumors that Nordstrom may also join the line up of prestigious mall anchor stores.
The Mall at Univeristy Town Center is a $315 million project, the largest new construction project in the Sarasota Area since the Great Recession and another positive sign for this rebounding region. The project will create 1,000 construction jobs and 5,000 jobs to fill the needs of the stores, nearby hotels and restaurants.
The Mall at University Town Center is located at the intersection of I-75 and University Parkway. While the Mall at University Town Center will set a new standard for upscale shopping in Sarasota, the area is currently served by two enclosed malls and the world famous and picturesque St. Armands Circle.
The Mall at University Town Center is being built by the Benderson Development Company for the Michigan-based Taubman Centers, Inc. Taubman Centers, Inc. owns and operates other upscale shopping malls in Tampa, Orlando, Palm Beach County and Miami. The Sarasota Area has come of age with the addition of the Mall at University Town Center!
