Thanks for the tip, I got used to going back and forth. The one thing that I like to do is center my videos. It looks more professional, than off to one side.
Sweet. This wil definitely save a few steps. I often switch between them. Suggested.
This new method of injecting HTML will make little tweaks and added content so much easier. It was annoying have to save and go back each time.
Excellent post Craig, you show how easy it can be to insert html code, (might as well be Greek to me), something that I have always avoided. I'm going to give it a try today. Suggested.
Good grief it's about time. The old system was so confusing. I would tell people if you can master the editing features on AR you can do anything! HA.. great post, of course suggested cause this just had to get out. Thanks Craig
Sally - glad to see you - this is MUCH better now - I just gave it my first test drive and LIKE it
Winston - good point especially for smaller width embeds - the 640 width is nearly as wide as the post content so it doesn't have much margin but a little - I would center the placeholder text and then paste over it with the embed code for the easiest way to do this
Debbie - is was especially frustrating when you came back to edit and then you got a tiny edit window and you had to close out even ONE MORE TIME - this is much easier now
Bryan - yes if you know a few HTML basics you can tweak too! I just did that also and SO Much easier now
Nancy - once you know the one-two-three steps you are good to go - happy embedding! :)
Tammy - now if we can get the font and size selector on our AR toolbar, keep the wishlist open! :)
Ebrahim - yes I like the all caps because when you are scanning the HTML popup it pops the text out a little
I sure didn't know that this shortcut was now available. Thanks for sharing.
Craig- I learned from the best (you) about putting in a "placeholder" like Video Here when I embed video. This new feature will definitely make it easier. Thanks Craig.
Craig, I like the new method significantly better! I'm used to dropping in Google Maps or YouTube vids, used it yesterday for a framed custom IDX result. I'm liking it :)
Craig- It took me a minute to realize where the new HTML button was! But it is a lot easier to switch between the two icons. Thanks for the update.
Thanks for pointing out this new update - I like it and it's very helpful and makes things a lot easier.
I have to say, the development team getting rid of "switching from WYSIWYG to HTML" has been one of my favorite changes to ActiveRain in the past year.
@Craig and Ebrahim: I've always just sloshed my way through all the HTML to make edits. It never occured to me to leave myself a placeholder. :/ That's a pretty great tip! Thanks!
Thanks Craig for the explanation. I just noticed this today when I'm trying to complete a post however, when I enter the html code as I routinely did for all my past posts for change of font it's not working. I shouldn't have to enter the code any differently as what I did before, right? Perhaps the system is just currently down???
Even though I studied web devvelopment at a local college in 2001, I really didn't use it much and have forgotten most of what I learned. It may take me more than your blog post to teach me how to do this but I AM definitely going to read it again and bookmark it.
Craig, It is nice to have the HTML right there instead of the time consuming option of back and forth.
Thanks for the update on the HTML input. I'm sure it will be much easier and less intimidating. And a good reminder to put our YouTube Video's on AR!
Craig: I use a lot of HTML on my websites, it gives me control over the data based driven ones. I'll start using it on AR now too.
Thanks for the update Craig, definitely makes life a little simpler when pasting code into a blog.
Craig, thank you for the great tips. I really should plan one evening a month to sit down and learn about all this technology.
Hi Craig. It was a pain to go back and forth all the time to add things into the html mode. Glad to see it's easier now. BTW, How can I increase my font size and color in this html editor?
This is amazingly informative. I probably wouldn't have noticed that little html option for quite some time.
Yeah, as this has always been a challenge for me. Thanks for writing this and I am bookmarking it for future reference.
Mike - I'm glad to share it
Kathy - the placeholder helps alot, needle in haystack otherwise!
BLiz - great isn't it!
Ilyce - thanks for visiting - glad you see the new button :)
Francine - I'm sure you will get good mileage out of it with your videos
Jeff - nice to see you - that's a great help to do the edit in HTML isn't it
Lynn - your HTML edits will be same now as before - font changes are usually with a style="font-family: xyz" type of call - give it another try
Nan - it is good to know a few things about HTML - gives you things to improve your posts
Ashley - embeds are great :)
Bobbie - it took too much time the other way - it was especially hard to teach others!
Debbie - ditto! :)
Hella - great to hear!
Michael - I've alredy used it and MUCH better now
Brian - anything that saves us time is welcomed!
Mark - learn a little at a time - great plan
Jerry - one way is if you start off your post in HTML do an entry like
<p style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 16px; color: #333">Some text</p>
then go back to regular view, you can use that base text to start your post
It still gets confusing even so - scribefire or google docs are good choices to compose and paste from
Jill - happy embedding with your new found button! :)
Paula - I was very happy to see that button come around - we were told it was on its way! :)
Found it yesterday when I was posting. Looks like what we see on WP and other places so knew how to work it instantly.
Oh great ... something new to learn about HTML! I've barely tackled the old way. But if this makes it easier (and I pray that it does) ... I'm in! Bookmarking this ... thank you!
Gene
As always gerat advice Craig, and the place hold tip is very practical. Thanks.
Craig-I did notice the change yesterday, I like it. Thanks for the placeholder tip!
So cool Craig, i knew something was different but couldn't find the html buttons!
Craig, So glad you told us. When did it change? I was still making sure I saved between each step before switching back only yesterday.
Craig - yay!! A lesson I already knew... whew! I feel like I am learning some things. I personally like to use {video here} - The curvy little brackets seem to help me find it.
I should have read this before I suffered thru looking for the HTML button. Thanks for the post.
Craig,
Like all changes, it's going to take a little getting use to. Pretty soon, it will be like second nature and we'll forget all about the old way we used to do things.
Rich
Craig:
I noticed the change when I embedded a YouTube video this weekend. I still get the smaller screen when I change back to wysiwyg, but it isn't a problem. I just save the blog and go back to edit it.
Thanks Craig.. the other day I thought i was crazy.. missing buttons? it then made sense with the WP mindset.. it is now much easier.. but working in HTML needs a bit of a bookmark like you say to know where to put things.
Craig - this certainly is great for anyone who utilizes both editing windows for writing/editing here in the rain ..... especially for adding code snippets
Craig - I didn't realize this change had been made. This will make it easier. Thanks for the info.
Totally agree and wrote about this update being on the way about a month ago. They are constantly looking to upgrade the quality of their product. Way to go, Active Rain! :)
The current button saves a lot of time compared to the original method. I too like maps and videos, this will simplify things.
Thanks Craig.
Good move by AR on this one. I like the control HTML provides as I use it all the time on my website and blog. Thanks for the post.
Yay!!! This is awesome! Those extra steps were painful so I'm super pleased to see that we have an easier process. Can't wait to use it.
Thanks for sharing, Craig.
Kathy
Thanks for the tips, Craig! Haven't done a post since the change, but am looking forward to taking the new changes for a spin, they look SOOOO much easier!
Thank you. I will bookmark this and read it again. Thanks for the tip to use google maps.
I am very glad to hear of this much needed update, it should save a lot of time. Thanks for letting us know about the update!
Glad to see Activerain is making it easier to go back and forth with HTML code. The WYSIWYG is so much easier but sometimes you need to get into that code especially with a video.
I noticed it the other day & I like it. Just less steps now & actually this is exactly the same as my RE/MAX website.
Craig
Yep I noticed this right away. I've been waiting for, oh, it seems like 6 years for this. The old way WAS a real pain.
Jeff
Love it!! I've been adding some videos in my recent post and in the comments section. It sure is much easier than saving and switching and saving and switching!! This is actually how it used to be back when I started on AR in 2006, not sure why they ever changed it to begin with, but sure glad they switched it back. Great post my friend!! :-)
Craig, This is great news. I didn't realize that it had changed. This will be so much easier. Prior to this I have had to struggle and delete until I got it correct.
Thanks Craig! We saw the HTML tab disappear but did not see the icon in the editor.
Good info! I've used html code in working on my own websites, and altho I can't really read/write it - I CAN c/p like a Champ!!!
Thanks for the insight into using HTML. I use it on my websites so your tutorial is worth the read.
Thanks for bringing this new tab to our attention Craig! This change must have taken place while I was on vacation this past week. I'm sure I would have found it, but may have had a moment of panic first : ) Sounds like it's going to be much easier and faster- yeaaah!
Hope you've had a great week and thanks again,
Gina
Craig, thanks for this post. I subscribe to your blog here on AR, and I just wanted to personally thank you for this post as well as all the others. YOu are awesome for sharing your talents and skill set, and your posts are always so well thought out and well presented, that I truly appreciate and look forward to them. You're awesome.
Thanks for the tip. I've wanted to add a video once or twice and have given up in frustration.
Thanks Craig...I am still in the learning mode for getting more daring with my posts. I will bookmark this for the future.
Craig... you always do way way more, above and beyond in your worthwhile contributions on line!
Thanks Craig! I'm fairly new here, and I thought i was doing it wrong the way I was saving to draft and going back in to edit. A post I wrote last week took me 3 hours!!! I wished for an easier way, and it didn't take long to get my wish!
Thanks Craig! You're right about the old way being time consuming!!! Can't wait to try out the new tab.
Craig - I was so pleasantly surprised to see that html tag instead of the html page. It does make things so much easier; less confusing, and less time consuming. I used to hate that little box that came up after you switched back.
The old method was definitely annoying! Glad they finally made this easier to do!
I tried the new feature and it works so smoothly! It's a great improvement and will make it so much quicker to add maps and videos now.
Thanks for the post on the HTML instructions, I've bookmarked for future reference.
Excellent information! I just sent AR a note because I did not see it. Now I have to go find it in the editor.
Craig-Thanks for the info. The switching to HTML saving and returning was a hassle. Glad that's changed.
Worked like a charm, Craig! Thanks!
(I love learning new stuff from you--please keep posting!)
thanks for checking in Gabe - weathered the storm ok - now for NYC infrastructure to get back together again!
Craig, I just came to write a post and couldn't find the HTML tab. I searched in AR knowing that someone would have written something about it and there you were!
Thank you, thank you, thank you for posting this!! I had a video to add to my post for today and was very distressed that I couldn't find the old HTML tab! I decided to do a search and your post was the first one to come up. I've embedded my video, posted my blog and can now move with my day!
Craig, I just noticed that were from Staten Island. You might find the blog I just posted, This Is How We Roll... kind of interesting. We don't want you guys to ever think you've been forgotten.
OMG Graig, you make is soooo understandable! Thank you. Make it a great day.
Craig - it is so much easier to blog nowdays with AR. No more switching back and forth or forgetting to save the post to draft before switching to HTML. Now if technology would just blog for me...
Craig - what a great idea to use place holder text so you know where to post... I had never thught of that but I will now utilize going onward..
Craig, when I copy and paste, I get a blue screen and am unable to paste the code, this happens on the links too, can you tell me what I must have enabled or disabled?
I wanted to let you know that I am really into the HTML code and I am loving it. It is so much easier. Now I need to take some time to remember how to change text colors and other bumps to my post.
Happy New Year.
Thank you for teaching so clearly. That is genius. I just recently had to figure out how to change lot sizes from square foot to acres in HTML code and now am not intimidated any more. I will use this soon.
Great post. I haven't embedded videos yet but want to do a map today so I'll use your suggestion. Thanks.
Thank you Craig...I just noticed the old WYSIWIG was gone and was trying to figure things out...so I just searched HTML here on AR and arrived at your post!!!!
Craig, excellent tip. I haven't added any HTML snippets to any blog posts, but at least I know how now. It seems AR has done a good job to make it a lot easier for us.
Craig - I always found switching back and forth between the "Wissywig" and HTML so intimidating. Hopefully, my nerves will be calmer with the A/R update.
