We had an earthquake in New England Tuesday. The U.S. Geological Survey said the 4.0 magnitude quake hit around 7:12 p.m. and its epicenter was about 3 miles west of Hollis Center, Maine, and about 20 miles west of Portland.
In Piermont, we didn't feel a thing. Our local newspaper, Gannett's Journal News, covered the quake with a story the next day which carried the following headline:
"Maine earthquake felt from Ossining to Pelham, caused no damage."
I believe our news media needs more headlines like that.
Think about it. All we hear in the news are stories about violence and destruction, drugs and out-of-control celebrities. And that's just the sports section! We need more headlines like the one about the earthquake.
Here's a few headlines I'd like to read:
"Senate, House pass legislation that doesn't inconvenience anybody."
"Mars rover finds enough diamonds to cover cost of the flight."
"Crazy NFL weekend: Every game ends in a tie."
"Obama, Romney agree to disagree and cede election to Letterman."
Those kind of headlines would make welcome reading at my breakfast table. So come on Gannett. Start cranking out the good news once in a while.
