It’s not my fault; I didn’t know I had a leak.
It’s a good idea to check regularly for plumbing leaks in your house or apartment. Plumbing leaks can cause property damage, waste water, and cause mold and mildew. If detected early many of these problems can be avoided.
Outside, a leak can occur at the hose bib, irrigation pipes, or water supply lines. Generally, leaks outside the house cause less property damage but can be wasteful and can lead to expensive utility bills. Over time, these leaks can get worse; so check water lines by looking at the pipes and wet areas in the soil.
Finding leaks in the early stages may be a little more difficult inside the home. Much of the water supply and drain lines are hidden within the walls, floors and ceilings. It is important to note that most leaks occur where there are moving parts. Shut off valves, plumbing fixtures and drain p-traps are common sources of water leaks; these need to be checked on occasion.
Since many of these troublesome areas are located under sinks, it may be a good idea to limit what you are storing in the cabinets. It is easy to just put the detergents, garbage bags, ant spray, and on and on. Soon the cabinet is
jammed with way to much stuff to ever see a leak. Too often, we find slow leaks while clearing the cabinets for another job.
We recently had to replace a garbage disposal that was making a screeching noise. After spending several minutes digging our way into the base cabinet, we discovered a slow leak in the drain pipe that was not known before. The damage was pretty extensive but the tenant had no idea that there was a problem because of the amount of items stored in the cabinet.
So check your home for leaks regularly, keep the areas accessible for easy viewing.
You probably don’t use half the things under the sink anyway. J
