Life Without The USPS? A Glimpse Into A 'Post Office-Less' Future

Reblogger C. Lloyd McKenzie

The unintended consequence of getting rid of the institution will be devastating.  Our congress has saddled the post office with requirements that the once profitable post office cannot manage.  Don't listen to the soundbites, watch congressional hearings on CSPAN. This is a travesty. I support the Post Office.

There’s been a lot of talk about the future of the US Postal Service and even the POTUS is now waxing rhetorical about how badly run it is and how it loses money.

Pretty scary considering that UPS and FedEx are non union and the USPS is . . . isn’t he supposed to be a pro-Union President?  BUT I DIGRESS.

6 years ago there was actually a surplus in the Post Office, according to a Postmaster I know well. The money was ‘reappropriated’ (stolen) by Congress – no one knows where it went.

Post offices all over the country have been closing, workers being bought out, laid off, community annexes combining and just plain closing down.

The Post Office has always represented COMMUNITY. A place for people who don't get out of the house for ANY other reason to go to take care of their business.

The internet has made the USPS irrelevant. But has it?

Is the post office really expendable?

IF THERE WERE NO POST OFFICE:

  • You would receive no paper mail. No one else besides the USPS delivers letters. UPS and FedEx deliver packages but not mail. Well, okay . . . if you want docs overnighted -- open wallet and dig deep
  • No more letters from loved ones; no love letters from a beau; no post cards from vacationing friends. Phone calls, e-mails, text messages but no hard copy mail. Hope you're not busy when they call!
  • Phone rates and text rates go up. Sure they would! They'd be the only way to communicate - not just a convenient way.

You would have no choice.

  • No checks would be in mail.
  • If you telecommuted you would need to find another way to get paid. Telecommuting has increased exponentially in recent years. Think that would impact?
  • You would be compelled to enroll in direct deposit. The banks of course would enjoy being able to charge you more for that service.
  • Need a zip code? Don't ask USPS! They won't be around!
  • Want to prove you sent someone something? You better hand deliver it with a witness! No more Certified, Registered or Delivery Confirmation.

You would have no choice.

  • If you needed a money order (USPS money orders are universally believed to be ‘assured funds’ --and if you’ve received a bogus money order you know how important it is to have assurance of good funds), you would probably need to have a bank cashier’s check drawn to pay bills if you did not pay with a personal check (and since you wouldn’t be mailing a check . . . expect gas to go up.)
  • More driving to pay your bills - higher auto emissions - bad for environment and traffic and life. And I'm sure the government would figure out a way to justify charging us more for that too!

You would have no choice.

  • When you move, you'll need to let everyone know where you moved because the change of address service that is provided for us free of charge via the USPS would no longer be available. Hopefully you will remember all the people you have to notify.
  • Get your passport somewhere else. Expect THAT to cost a lot more!
  • No more PO Boxes. If you live rurally you would simply have to make other arrangements. Like charter a plane. Or perhaps covered wagon.
  • As the demand would be created, electronic mail would become a charge service. Bet it would!

You would have no choice.

So the next time you lament the inefficiency of the US Postal Service and start thinking we don’t need it any more . . . remember that this low cost way of getting mail is a reliable constant in our lives.

What else can that be said about in this day and age?

The USPS provides a valuable service but some belt tightening is in order...for all government services.

The legacy costs of the USPS are what is killing their budget...they need to become NON-union and start taking a page from the REAL WORLD....STOP the Forever stamps, STOP the wrappings and gift sales, STOP having buildings in EXPENSIVE (convenient) areas and put them in CHEAPER buildings and have the dropboxes like UPS and FedEx....sponsoring a NASCAR team would not be amiss so we can put that in phase 2

Thanks for your comments.

Wallace, I think that some of these areas that the USPS have moved into were directed by Congress.  Congress also place requirements on pension for its workers which in my opinion to break the neck of the Post Office.  You cannot privatize all functions...I also disagree with making the Post Office Non-Union.  It wasn't the action of Unions that created this problem.  By the way, Unions should always have a place in the workplace...what I would say is that Unions have no place in politics...but that's another blog.

I think that the postal service committed suicide decades ago when they adopted the customer service attitude of "screw you, we don't care how bad we are because we are the only game in town".  UPS, Fedex, and maybe others will Compete to fill the gap when the USPS finishes its decline.

Sure there is some nostalgia involved with the current system but things move on when there is a better system, as long as the government doesn't keep propping up an obsolete system.
