Negotiation - Both Skill And Art - The Deal Whisperer

Some people take for granted the ordinary negotiating we might do on a daily basis - something along the lines of "Gee, mom, I don't want to have to take out the trash", only to be met with an alternative chore of picking of dog stuff in the backyard instead.  Hmm, maybe that trade didn't work so well?  Or "can you stop for milk on the way home (so I don't have to)".

But when it comes to negotiating and real estate, it becomes both a skill and an art.  There is a reason that Realtors are professionals (though some have a greater skill in this area than others).  What is missed is that it is NOT just about price.  Way to many times, people think that is the majority of negotiating.  However, they might be missing on 5-10 key issues that are critical to a buyer or seller, perhaps even ones that would have them changing their flexibility on pricing if they could just have a few of those terms.

Clearly, all of this begins and ends with LISTENING !!!  Without it, we have no idea what our client is seeking, let alone the other party.  As we go through the process of a deal, there are numerous opportunities to negotiate.  Don't pass them by because you weren't listening.
