Emotions Interfere With Reason...Agents Can't Afford To Show Emotion

By

I don’t know about you, but I was taught from day one to keep emotion out of business transactions.  Business becomes fogged and skewed when tainted with emotion.  Transactions can be destroyed when conflicting emotions are added to the mix.

We have no control over the emotions of buyers and sellers, but we certainly should have control of our own.  It’s a “given” that a seller will become emotional during the sale of a family home; and it’s understood that a buyer may become overwhelmed with emotion when spending hundreds of thousands of dollars and not necessarily having a thorough understanding of what the process of buying involves.

The last factor that needs to be added to the equation is the unstable emotional state of a real estate agent.  The real estate agent needs to be without emotion every step of the way; the agent is the anchor that stabilizes the client; the agent is the sounding board that receives all of the emotion that’s emitted by the client; and it’s the agent who needs to calm, soothe and ease all of that emotion before it interferes with the positive outcome which is the goal in every transaction.

Emotions interfere with reason; and without the ability to reason, buying and/or selling a home is a futile task.

Conrad..... if only there were "real jobs" available....that would help filter the debris from our industry!!!!

Mona.... venting is for plumbing.... it doesn't belong in a real estate transaction..... hope all is well, Mona....

GOOD MORNING BARBARA!  Clients tend to follow their agents lead - and that includes emotions.  If the agent gets upset - more than likely a client  will too- but if the agent holds it together and maintains control of themselves - well a client will likely follow suit - not all the time - but it's what I tend to see.  Bottom line - use emotions wisely - or not at all like you write!

Hi GAb.... I think some agents don't even realize they are initiating a storm when they start to rant in front of their clients....

Hi Barbara, I agree completely although sometimes it's difficult. If I get a low offer on a home I do not freak out. I do explain to the agent that it's low but I'll see what my seller says. When working with sellers and buyers I do keep my emotions in check. We are there to calm them down.

Good morning Jackie,

Great topic! I couln't agree more with your assessment of our place in the transaction. Someone has to see the bigger picture and keep their emotions in check! Our job is to obtain our clients goals to do that we have to possessing a level head to deal with the transaction. We need to guide them through the process eliminating stress, offering support and that much needed voice of reason. Suggested!!!

I am a very unemotional person so this is easy for me. However, I do use emotions to get my point across at times. Usually when trying to keep my sellers from shooting themselves in the foot by making a bad decision. In these instances I am very forceful and may display emotions if needed to get the right result.

So maybe "controled emotions" is something we can use to our advantage and our client/customers advantage.

Folks hire me to guide them. I have no problem doing so.

Now I feel like crying for some reason. Must be all this talk about emotions!!

Emotion wrecks more deals other than a mortgage rejection. When an agent gets emotional things get messy. This is one lesson i teach all my new agents right from the start. Too many other agents i see get intertwined with their clients emotion and it often is a deal keller.

Many times an agent can make things worse by getting emotionally involved.  You must stay objective and understand your clients needs.  I fully agree with your post Barbara!

Barbara, I have to say that the people that push my buttons the most are usually the other agents who are being demanding, selfish, controlling and downright unethical. It's really NICE when I can represent both sides, because there is no bad filter...I know how each side feels and can be a mediator. It's happened so many times and been successful in this tiny community for almost 7 years that if I let emotion run away with me, the word would've gotten out pretty quickly and I wouldn't have been able to do business where I LIVE for very long!

P.S. I came over from Mona's blog that you inspired.

Simple and true but so hard to keep in focus. I find that when I am dealing with a particularly emotional transaction, I make sure that I am calm before any conversations with the parties. Sometimes this means saying, "we will talk tomorrow." Nothing is that critical that it can't wait until everyone has a good nights sleep. This helps me keep the emotions out of the transactions.

I love this post. You are so right about us being the anchor and voice of reason. There are so many times that buyers get all caught up in decor or in the bidding and it is then that we need to keep emotion in tact so we can get down to business.

We have a couple of agents in our market area that go above and beyond in the drama department.  You cringe when you have to work with them. They seem to have a need to create a problem and then work to solve it, so they look great and you are the bad guy. I yi yi!

Barbara:

We have enough to deal with with the Seller's emotions and the buyer's agent's emotions, we can not let ours interfere with a transaction.
