The Avenues in Salt Lake City are known for their beautiful, classic-style homes. Victorian homes are probably the most popular of the many styles that can be found in The Avenues. Why are they so popular? Because they are gorgeous, unique, and uncommon. A nice, renovated Victorian home in The Avenues can be quite expensive, though, especially depending on what part of the Avenues it is in.

Do you know what features classifiy a home as being “Victorian”? Don't worry, most people don't. Here are a few of the defining characteristics:

First, there is a difference between a Victorian Era home and a Victorian Style home. A Victorian Era home is any home that was built during the reign of Queen Victoria (1837-1901). There are many distinct styles that were built during the Victorian Era. The Avenues is home to many Victorian homes, like this one, which recently sold for under $300,000 on 'I' St.

Here is a list of all of the currently-available Victorian homes in The Avenues.

Other features:

Bay Window: this is a window that protrudes out of the side of a house.

Columns: very common in Victorian homes in The Avenues

Clapboard siding: not always present on Victorian homes in The Avenues, but very common

Pediment: The part of the roof that hangs over the porch.

Dormer Windows: a window that comes out of the side of the roof and has its own roof

Turret: somewhat common for Victorian homes in The Avenues. Personally, I love the look of turrets, but they are not always very functional on the inside. I've always particularly liked when the put the stairway to the upstairs in the turret.

Victorian homes in The Avenues in Salt Lake City can have many other features, as well, but this gives you a good idea of what to expect.

As far as pricing, they can range from $110 per square foot for fixer-uppers up to well over $250 per square foot for nicely renovated homes. Purchase prices range from $250,000 up to well over $1,000,000.
