Hampden town meeting agrees to fund study for possible new police station

HAMPDEN - Voters at Monday’s special Town Meeting by a majority vote approved the appropriation of $15,000 for a study for a possible new police station.

Police Chief Jeffrey Farnsworth said the Police Department is operating “24/7 out of an 800 square foot space in the Town Hall.”

“Our server room is a bath room,” he said. “We can’t store files.”

Farnsworth said there is no room to expand in the current Town Hall.

“We are looking for a recommendation to expand in the most cost effective way,” Farnsworth said.

Also at the special Town Meeting, voters approved by majority vote an appropriation of $14,000 for a thermal imaging camera for the Fire Department.

The camera can be used to find the hot spot in a fire or to help locate a victim trapped in a fire or to help a firefighter find an exit out of heavy smoke.

Also approved at the special Town Meeting was $9,000 from available funds for a new phone system for the Town Hall, senior center, Highway Department and fire station.

Voters also approved an appropriation of $150,000 towards a new $360,000 fire truck.

Selectman John D. Flynn said, “We’re going to put $150,000 towards the new fire truck and finance the rest.

Voters also approved appropriating $153,211 to the town’s stabilization account, or savings account.

“We bought things with the money we had available, and we’re placing the rest in a town savings account,” Flynn said.

He added, “This will keep us from having to raise the tax rate.”

The vote to place $153,211 in the town’s stabilization was approved by a two thirds vote of the Town Meeting.

The town’s Advisory Committee recommended the appropriation.

Flynn said the town is trying to live within its means without requiring a big increase in the tax rate.
