Thanks to Tim Alberdi, owner of Redneck Wine Company, for sharing his insightful blog post regarding the appealing benefits of owning a wine cellar in your home. As new home builders Tampa, we have included wine fridges in many of our kitchens, however a built-in cellar can be a luxurious addition to a custom home. Here are the three things you MUST know about building a wine cellar:
1. Shelving. Bottles must be kept at the proper angle to preserve the wine and ensure that it ages correctly. Wine racks are typically wooden, with Redwood and Mahogany being the most common species. Stay away from Cedar, as it does not stand up to a humid atmosphere and can taint the wine. Metal or glass may also be used to complement a contemporary style home. 
2. Temperature. The most important aspect of wine preservation is climate control. Your wine cellar will need a specific HVAC cooling system to keep the room at a certain temperature, ranging from 55-58 degrees F, with 50-70% humidity. Spray foam insulation can also be used inside your walls to further protect your liquid assets. A high-quality, air-tight door also needs to be installed to lock in coolness.
3. Lighting. If your bulbs give off too much heat, it can damage your wine inventory. A dimly lit room is needed, enough so that you may read the maker and vintage of your collection, but still have the darkened ambiance of a true wine cellar. Recessed, display or track lighting can be used, with energy-efficient LED bulbs.
A wine cellar adds a great sense of luxury and ambiance to a home, not to mention a large, well-stocked inventory. Long gone are the days when wine cellars are only found buried deep inside an intricate Mediterranean mansion.
