Custom Cabinets...Does it really matter to customers??

Consider this! Most builders in my area are installing Chinese cabinets in their spec homes.  I have been running a custom shop for over ten years with a good bit of business.  Most buyers do not seem to be extremely interested in the quality of the cabinetry.   What are your views on this?

Well, it's funny....I never thought customers cared either, until they look at purchasing a home that they like but think it's too much money.  Then they start to pick apart everything to talk themselves out of it.

"That lighting came from Home Depot!"

That said - I do know that people purchasing HIGHER PRICED homes will turn their noses up if the home with the $400,000 price tag has formica counter tops.

A lot of people may not be able to really tell the difference between a good quality cabinet though and a fairly decent Chinese knock off (not the ones that are installed in mobile homes; they're easy to spot).  My husband calls all the cabinets at Home Depot "junk" but *I* honestly have a difficult time at first glance telling whether they are so junky or not.

I think in your basic suburban or typical rural home, high end cabinetry could be a waste.

I'm getting ready to remodel my kitchen and I have been wondering the same thing. I do think you need to keep in mind the market in your area and the price of the home. I agree that in higher priced homes there is an expectation that there is higher quality materials. In a first time buyer type of homes I think as long as it looks good and works all is good.
