Replacing your lap siding? Better measure first

measuring siding heightNot all lap siding is the same? If you are looking to replace some water damaged siding, be sure to take accurate measurements before starting the project. Even a slight difference in dimension can make things difficult for a repair.

Taking a quick look at the siding, things may appear the same as the new material you saw in the store. But on closer inspection the measurements are a little different, the grain slightly changed, or the contours not shaped the same. It would be best to have a piece with you at the time of purchase.

Many of the large manufacturers of this sort of lap siding are no longer in business, or had to make changes to produce a better product. The original products have experienced a high level of failure that needed to be changed.

Take a good look at your siding before getting started with any siding replacement.

Tom,I think it could get frustrating for a home owner to discover that their siding is no longer available and they are now faced with the possibility of a mismatched repair. Might be a good idea to put some extra pieces away in the attic when the siding is first purchased for any potential repairs that may come up in the future.

The best part of that advise is to take a sample with you when shopping for more.  You can not actually remember colour, and slight texture and pattern differences make a huge difference. Measurments are relatively easy.

Tom -- I just hope the company that made our siding is still around if anything happens, as they didn't leave any pieces behind when they installed it.

Thanks Kristine. The only problem with that is you are committed to doing something soon. There will be a hole until a new piece can be found.

David, I traced the edge of a piece one time to find a match. I couldn't take the chance of not being able to find a good match.

Silvia - Most of the homes with this siding are likely to be tract homes with no extra siding around. Worse yet, many of the manufacturers went through class action lawsuits, or stopped producing the material any more. Finding a exact match is very difficult unless the siding is relatively new.

There are so many things to get matched Robert, but if it doesn't fit, nothing else matters.

I hope that the siding was done recently Steven. You might want to consider finding some now.  :)
