County to Open Shelters in Preparation For Hurricane Sandy. The National Weather Service has issued the following warnings for St. Mary's County MD:
A HIGH WIND WATCH REMAINS IN EFFECT FROM SUNDAY AFTERNOON THROUGH
MONDAY EVENING. 25 TO 35 MPH WINDS SUNDAY WILL INCREASE TO 35 TO 45 MPH
WITH GUSTS TO AROUND 60 MPH SUNDAY NIGHT INTO MONDAY.
A FLOOD WATCH IS IN EFFECT FROM 2 AM EDT SUNDAY THROUGH TUESDAY
EVENING - 6 TO 8 INCHES POSSIBLE.
A COASTAL FLOOD WATCH IS IN EFFECT FROM LATE SUNDAY NIGHT THROUGH
LATE MONDAY NIGHT.
WATER LEVELS ARE FORECAST TO REACH AROUND 2 FEET ABOVE NORMAL.
PROLONGED STRONG WINDS AND SATURATED SOILS WILL INCREASE THE
POTENTIAL FOR DOWNED TREES...POWER OUTAGES...AND POSSIBLY MINOR
STRUCTURAL DAMAGE.
The Department of Emergency Services & Technology is warning citizens of the forecasted flooding associated with Hurricane Sandy. Citizens located in coastal or low lying areas prone to flooding are strongly encouraged to make plans now to relocate. In preparation, the County will be opening shelters at Leonardtown and Great Mills High Schools on Sunday at 12:00 noon. Citizens planning on relocating to the shelter should bring any toiletries and medications in quantities sufficient for several days. Pets will be housed at the St. Mary’s County Fairgrounds.
