The primary purpose of language is to convey meaning between two parties so that there is understanding between them.  In that sense, as long as both parties understand that by “fish” they mean “dog” then I suppose all is fine.  But ideally we want to be as accurate as possible.


One of the more commonly misused words I hear in my profession is the word “dry rot”.  People want a “pest and dry rot” inspection.  It is, of course, a minor bother because I know what they mean: they mean that they want a wood destroying insect and wood decay (etc.) inspection.  But the irony of the use is that there 1) really is such a thing as technical “dry rot”, and 2) most of the “dry rot” (as commonly used) that we see in this area is actually wet, not dry.  


With the desire to balance being “correct” and to convey ideas that my clients understand, I typically use the word “wood decay”.  But one could get technical if needed, as there are many different specifies of wood decay fungi: white rot fungi, white rot fungi, etc.

Yes, the words "dry rot" have nothing to do with "dry" at all, and rot is decay. Similiar to short sales being anything but short.
