Why I Love Living in Franklin NC

Franklin NC Town Center

Actually, it would take much more time and space to write about the reasons I love living in Franklin NC than this space will allow. Consequently, I am going to give you a couple things to wet your whistle and hopefully convince you to come to Franklin NC and enjoy this wonderful people friendly destination.

The Town of Franklin's website puts it this way, "Franklin is a small mountain town surrounded by beautiful streams, waterfalls, mountains, hills and valleys. The people are friendly and organize lots of activities, including festivals and arts and crafts shows. There are plenty of trails for hiking and the views are breathtaking. There is also plenty of fishing, hunting, rafting and kayaking available. The Franklin area is the Gem Capitol of the World, so if you try your hand at mining you are bound to find many beautiful and sometimes very valuable stones."  These things are all true, but there are some attributes that Franklin NC has that may escape your notice if not told... So allow me a few lines to express my love for this town..

First, Franklin is surrounded almost 75% of the way or more by US Forest Service land. Now, at first thought that may not mean much to you. The benefit of this "natural fence"  is that FRANKLIN can not sprawl and the result is a community that has limited growth propensities and more stable home pricing. A second benefit of this "natural fence" is that because Franklin can't "sprawl" our population growth is limited which in turn will not provide "mega national chain franchises" the demographic footprint they need in order to facilitate business in our area. This is a wonderful benefit because we don't have all those chain stores mucking up our beautiful area. However, should you want to patronize those type stores they are located in surrounding communities only minutes away.

Second, Franklin NC has some of the friendliest people on the planet! I challenge you to go into any store, shop, or restaurant and see how you are treated (LIKE FAMILY!)  When I first came here from Fort Lauderdale in 1993, I misinterpreted this friendliness for weirdess! Now I understand that I was weird and the Franklinites were friendly. This is why most of us need to come to Franklin to "DETOX" from the big city life, the hustle and bustle, the honking horns and the over populated fast paced life styles with the miles and miles of asphalt and buildings!  I will be posting more about why I love living in Franklin NC soon. But if you're like me and you can't wait... visit my website www.baldheadtherealtor.com   In the mean time here's a link to some good Franklin NC Videos... enjoy!

Franklin sounds like a nice place - I think I would love to live there too.   It's like when we visited Park City UT back in 2007, they told us that "Park City is where you come for the winters, but STAY for the summers".   We actually thought it was fabulous (coming from 116 degrees in AZ) that we could eat outside in July and enjoy the summers so much that when the fall leaves started changing, we couldn't leave - it was too beautiful and such a special place to live.    It looks a lot like Franklin.   I think I would feel right at home there.   Maybe I can visit you soon.   Shanna

While I am not familiar with  Franklin specifically( but now I know more about it) I have heard very good things about North Carolina in general.

Honest Perspective

Do not go to Franklin. It's trashy, garbage everywhere. Some beautiful places but the garbage takes away from it all. Bible belt, if that matters one way or another. Generally ignorant but usually very kind people. Be prepared to get into long conversations wherever you go. Be prepared to be asked what church you attend in casual conversation. And be prepared to see garbage everywhere, along the road, in peoples yards. This is a place where things go to decompose and rot.

Great Thai food in town. And Stamey's is the best breakfast place.

Anyone who says Franklin is 100% amazing either has something to gain by telling you so or is used to living in a place that had garbage everywhere and believes that to be an acceptable standard of living.

There are beautiful waterfalls, there are National Forests, but they are strewn with trash. People are kind, often racist, and their yards are filled with garbage. One house might be nice and the next is falling in on itself and has garbage littering the yard as far as the eye can see.

It wears on the soul and you just get tired of seeing the mess.

The town has potential, but the backwoods trashy way is so ingrained here, it's unlikely things will change.

And Shanna Day, Franklin is nothing like Park City. Park City is a designer town that has natural landscapes that are actually respected by the residents. It is also much larger and has overdeveloped in some ways with it's shopping centers and such. Probably because it is right outside of Salt Lake. These towns are not even remotely comparable. I'm afraid you would be very disappointed if visiting. I have spent much time in both places. Franklin is a poverty stricken area, where people never leave, and for some reason people from Florida retire here. If you come, you will go down in general sanitation. You will lose your clear clean air and your clean town, and find a small town with some local culture that is charming, but a place where 70% of the houses, buildings, and otherwise need to be demolished. Stay where you are, go to Jackson Hole for a weekend instead. You'll thank me.
