Montgomery County, Maryland Closings For Tuesday, October 30, 2012

Montgomery County Government is closed today.  All County facilities, including libraries are closed today.

Federal offices are closed to the public.  Non-emergency employees (including employees on pre-approved paid leave) will be granted excused absence (administrative leave) for the number of hours they were scheduled to work unless they are: required to telework, on official travel outside of the Washington, DC, area,  on leave without pay, or  on an alternative work schedule (AWS) day off.  Telework-Ready Employees who are scheduled to perform telework on the day of the announcement or who are required to perform unscheduled telework on a day when Federal offices are closed to the public must telework the entire workday or request leave, or a combination of both, in accordance with their agencies' policies and procedures, subject to any applicable collective bargaining requirements. Emergency Employees are expected to report to their worksites unless otherwise directed by their agencies.

All State offices and facilities will be closed effective 6:00 a.m. Monday, October 29, 2012 to the end of the day shift  Tuesday, October 30, 2012.  Emergency essential personnel should report as scheduled.
Note: This closing and/or liberal leave information applies to principal units and independent agencies in the Executive Branch, except educational units under the jurisdiction of the University of Maryland, Morgan State University, St. Mary's College of Maryland, Maryland School for the Deaf and Baltimore City Community College.

There will be no Ride-On Service Today; Metro services are suspended this morning.

Montgomery County Public Schools are closed.

Montgomery College is closed.

As of 5AM there are currently three shelters available for public use; These facilities are the White Oak Community Recreation Center for people and pets, at 1700 April La. Silver Spring; the Activity Center at Bohrer Park for people only, at 506 S. Frederick Ave., Gaithersburg; and the Mid- County Community Recreation Center for people only, 2004 Queensguard Rd., Silver Spring.  Those going to shelters are advised to bring prescription medicines, critical phone numbers, and any comfort items such as personal pillows. Residents taking their pets to the White Oak shelter are advised that the shelter will be capable of housing dogs, cats, and small animals such as guinea pigs and rabbits. The shelter will be staffed by the County Animal Services Division and the volunteer County Animal Response Team (CART).

No Charge for County Parking Facilities today.  There will also be no charge at County on-street meters.

The Transfer Station is tentatively scheduled to open today at 9 a.m.

Montgomery County urges residents to stay in a safe place and avoid traveling today. Hazards including winds and flooding may still occur and create unsafe road conditions.

The homeless shelters --Gude Men's, 600 E. Gude Dr., Rockville and Progress Place, 8210 Colonial La., Silver Spring are prepared to serve individuals who arrive.

Residents are reminded to avoid areas subject to flooding, including low spots, canals and streams. Do not attempt to drive on a flooded road, which could lead to becoming stranded or trapped because the depth of the water and the condition of the road is not always obvious. Be especially cautious at night when it is harder to recognize flood dangers, downed wires and other hazards.

As a reminder, when approaching a traffic signal without power, State law requires motorists to treat the intersection as a four-way stop.

Montgomery County 311 (240-777-0311 from a cell phone) will be open continuously for the duration of the storm. Call 311 for questions regarding County Government services, programs and/or issues, or go to www.MC311.com for online help. MC311.com is available on smart phones.

Call 911 in the event of life-threatening emergencies or call 301-279-8000 for police-related non-emergencies.

The Kentlands Clubhouse will be closed today (Tuesday) due to the storm,  This includes the CMC offices as well as the fitness room.

Debbie:  Our internet connections have been on and off.  We will have to take a look at the neighborhood to see what damages were caused by the high winds last night.  It is raining in Kentlands and there is snow in western Maryland.
