NYC | Hurricane Sandra on UWS Hurricane Sandy Downtown & Elsewhere

By
Real Estate Agent

Lower Manhattan below 34th Street has been devastated by hurricane Sandy. The Hudson river overflowed at 23rd Street onto 10th and 11th Avenue. The west side highway, a river. The East Village is under terrible floods as is Battery Park City. Fires in Chelsea and throughout the city. Sandy caused terrible damage perhaps the worst hurricane damage in NYC history. Sandy wrecked havoc through out the region.

Fortunately on the Upper West Side of Manhattan her name was Sandra. She didn't quite let her hair down here like she did downtown. Sandra took down a few trees, left a few puddles but her anticipated behavior was unacceptable for the Upper West Side neighborhood. So our doorman called her a town car and sent her on her way,-)

To all my friends, clients, colleagues and family downtown Manhattan, Brooklyn, Queens, Staten Island, City Island, New Jersey, Long Island and Westchester without power and devasting damage to your neighborhoods, homes and businesses please stay safe. Let me know if you need anything or any help.

French Roast was open last night and this morning, Broadway Farm open, Zabars cafe open full store opened at noon today.

The Corcoran Group Westside Gallery Office Open For Business

(Corcoran's 888 7th Ave @57th St. remains closed due to the crain and downtown offices are closed due to power outage)

Updates from the City:

  • Power - It is uncertain when power will be restored, but given the extensive impacts to the system, it will likely be at least a few days for the majority of the power to be restored by Con Edison
  • Transportation
o Partial bus service resume later today

o Staten Island Ferry service will likely not resume for a few days, although East River Ferry service will likely resume earlier
o Extensive flooding in tunnels, tracks, and stations exist in the subway system, particularly in the East River Crossings.  Subway service will likely be restored on a piecemeal basis.
o The Mayor has signed an executive order to allow taxi cabs to pick up multiple faires and for livery cabs to pick up street hails anywhere in the 5 boroughs.
  • Schools are closed tomorrow

I can only imagine Sandy daring to invade the Upper Westside.  She wouldn't know what hit her, instead of the other way around.

Yes, last night was scary for sure.  I'm glad you're okay.  I'm just 25 mi north, and we did okay...but several areas between us and north of us did not fare so well.  I hope they get power back soon.
