After seeing the pictures and talking to friends on the East Coast, I’m dumfounded by the damage of Sandy. Homeownership has many benefits but it can also be stressful. How can we be prepared before a disaster or storm hits?
Here are some simple yet very important steps:
1. Call your insurance agent and find out what you’re covered for. Many homeowners think they’re covered but in times of need, find out they are not. Are you covered for flood, wind or earthquake and if not, would it make sense to add that coverage?
2. Have a family plan for communication, evacuation and a meeting point.
3. Have “grab and go survival kits” with water, flashlights, candles, RX, can openers, blankets, food, med supplies, cash and pet supplies etc. to last a few days.
4. Don’t neglect your car. Be sure you have “grab and go survival kits” in your car as well.
5. Have all important family documents in one easy place. If you get time to evacuate, it helps when you know where to find things.
6. Have a plan in place that your family knows. Rehearse your plan with the family.
7. Never let your vehicle gas tank go below half full.
8. Know how to shut-off utilities in your home.
