You are ready to make a move, leaving your current home for a new residence. The hard part is past you, right? Well, not quite. Arranging a move can be daunting and very costly, the latter testing your budget in ways that you may not have previously imagined. Fortunately, there are also ways for you to save money — we list the top five here.
1. Reduce
The cost of your move will correlate with the amount of goods you have to move. This is an excellent time to hold a garage or yard sale, and get rid of those items you do not need. Carefully consider your belongings and prepare to purge your home of those things that you will not need at your new address. What you do not sell you can donate, obtaining tax receipts for your donations. Use the money you earn from your sale to help defray your moving expenses.
2. Pack
Your moving costs will mushroom if you rely on someone else to do your packing. Also, you will pay a mint if you expect your movers to supply the boxes, the bubble wrap and the tape for your move. Acquire the needed boxes from your supermarket or large retailer, who may be only too happy to keep delivery boxes out of trash or away from recycling. Most office supply stores sell bubble wrap and packing tape, and at prices far lower than what a moving company would charge.
3. Plan
Rushing into a move will cost you money. You won’t have time to solicit prices from moving companies and may simply take the first opportunity that comes along. Get at least three quotes and find out what your costs will be. Evaluate each company, obtain references and ask that all expenses be listed in plain sight. If a mover has a gas surcharge, you need to know what that figure is if you are make a proper comparison. You may be able to negotiate a lower rate especially if your move is during off-peak months or is to a popular destination.
