Keeping the Momentum...Hurdling the First Years in Real Estate

Will you bloom in your real estate career

There's an agent in my office just completing her first year in real estate..and she's wondering how she's going to keep afloat and garner new business to support her in her new career for the NEXT 12 months.  Year one was pretty challenging for her, and although she had some sales...the often unpredictable cash flow of real estate sales has her worrying.

I have many of my own ideas I thought I'd incorporate into the next few blog postings, but I'm curious what advice you in Active Rain land would advise as well.

I personally think blogging is KING, and recommend that to anyone.  There are free sites, and there is Active Rain...knowing your budget and business plan is the first place to look.

To me, marketing is time...and advertising is dollar.  What tips and practices do you recommend as KEY to beginning agents trying to make a sustainable income?

What items and services do you think every beginner should have in their arsenal?

I can remember the day I passed my real estate exam like yesterday.  All that foundation...and not a clue how to be an actual agent.  I'm grateful for the classes, academies, and online courses out there that helped shaped my pathways.

But there comes a point when you have to step out from the desk and into the public.

How did and do you ...keep the momentum?

It's good to have absolute goals-and some accountability.

Rare to have a new agent succeed solely on real estate sales income for the first year UNLESS they entered the BUSINESS with some operating capital.

I'm with you Michelle - Goals...and a business plan!

Lenn - thanks so much for stopping by.  I distinctly remember hearing in RE Class that we needed a savings account with $$ in it for our first year or two of our new real estate career!

The main thrust of our job is marketing.  I also believe blogging is KING.  They say it takes about 10,000 hours to really master something.  It has been a tough time for newbies, but I encourage all newbies not to quit yet.  Things are turning around.

Like most agents, the first year is hard.  Not only for inconsistent $ but the learning curve is huge.  I took Sweathogs my first year and I made quit a bit of money.  I had to get a listing every week and was dialing for dollars on a daily basis.  You gotta list to last as Floyd would say!

Gary - I really believe in marketing as well, Gary.  Blogging has certainly paid off for me and I think consistency in all efforts will pay off.  Consistent marketing efforts, networking, open houses...whatever one has in their business plan.

Hi Sandy - I started out part time, so the first three were real hard!  Now I'm full time and thankful to have a good base of referrals and repeat clients.  It all takes time!

What they don't tell you if you really need somebody to be supporting you for your first couple of years.
