Going Green With Canvas

You would think this is some brand new idea - I keep reading more and more about grocery stores going green by selling canvas bags to customers and either charging for plastic or not offering it at all. What is so new about this? When I lived in Europe in the 1970's and 1980's we took our shopping bags with us to the store. We used the entire array - canvas bags, string bags, crochet bags, baskets on wheels that you could walk home with - none of this is new!

When I moved back to the States in the 1980's grocery stores were selling the canvas bags. FEW people purchased them, but they were available. It is too bad that the general public waited so long to get on the band-wagon. It is like anything else, everyone ignores 'those fringe wierdos' that start making changes - and eventually the general public wakes up and starts to follow suit - When I go shopping for my groceries in Publix in Palm Harbor I now see more and more people leaving with canvas bags! Bravo! But........

Let's remember those 'fringe wierdos' that have been doing their part for the environment all along!!!!

Fringe weirdo here!  I still have one bag left from Giant Food in Virginia.  That bag has lasted over 20 years.  I've since added canvass, and now publix and walgreens are selling bags.  The only time I "forget" to use them is when I need a couple plastic bags for the trash can.  I like the idea of charging for plastic bags.  IKEA does it, most of Europe does it, now CA is going to do it.  That would be one sure fire way to get people to purchase their own bags and quit using plastic.  Afterall, who can affort 15 cents per bag when four zuchinni's cost $5!

HI B & BJ - A fringe weirdo, huh? I've never heard them called that before! I need to remember to leave a couple of canvas bags in my car! Our local grocery has the paper bags with handles - I usually request those because I find so many uses for them.

Barbara-Jo and Bill-- Hardly fringe now!  All the grocery stores in Tallahassee have their version of the canvas bag - and many companies are using them with their logos as a give away!!!  Love it!!!

I have a bunch of canvas bags, never remember to put them in the car and take them with me. Have any tips for that?
